The French Connection(1971)

William Friedkin really utilised new York City as a location in his gritty film based on the reports of real police officers.A high point is the breathtaking car/train chase that rivals,if not betters the one in Bullet, although the car used isn't as iconic as Steve McQueen's Mustang. However what makes the chase even more incredible is that Freidkin shot the scene without proper permits and he kept all the accidental collisions in.
Gene Hackman created a cinematic icon in playing Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and his performance warranted the Oscar he won for it.Roy Scheider was nominated for best supporting actor but criminally, lost out.The duo ooze charisma and intensity in every scene.Strange, then to think that director Friedkin was initially sceptical about casting Hackman, only relenting after names such as Paul Newman,Steve McQueen,Jackie Gleason,Peter Boyle,Charles Bronson and even New York Times columnist Jimmy Breslin were all ruled out.
Quite simply one of the greatest crime thrillers ever made.

Dr Jekyll and Sister Hide(1971)

Roy Ward Baker directs another version of the classic tale for Hammer. This time with Dr Jekyll turning into a sexy but evil woman.Grave robbers Burke and Hare turn up in this one to supply the bodies for Jekyll's immoral experiments.Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick shine in their roles as Jekyll and his alter ego but this is mostly style over substance and not as erotic or clever as Hammer intended it to be.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002) Harry returns for his 2nd year at Hogwarts, this time someone is 'petrifying' their victims, Harry is hearing voices and he needs to find the location of the Chamber. A darker tone than the first film, and also touching on racism, the cult of celebrity and the media, highlights include the flying car and elf Dobby (voiced by Toby Jones). Other excellent characters are introduced, teacher Lovelock(Kenneth Branagh), Lucius Malfoy( Jason Isaacs) and Moaning Myrtle(Shirley Henderson) 7.5/10

The Abominable Dr.Phibes(1971)

Vincent Price really hams it up in this good but campy film from Robert Fuest.Price plays an organist who avenges his wife's death after a car crash that also left him disfigured. The targets of his grief induced vengeance are the doctors who failed to save his wife's life. The most interesting part of the film are the deaths of the doctors, all inspired by the ten plagues of Egypt as written in the Old Testament.

The Hanging Tree(1959) A film set against the backdrop of The Montana Gold Rush, a solid storyline but with a pretty intelligent script and boosted by two excellent performances,Gary Cooper is just right playing a complex character, a doctor with a compassionate bed manner, but with a habit of controlling people and a murky past, and Maria Schell as the badly injured patient gives a sensitive, touching performance. There's enjoyable supporting roles for George C Scott as an evangelist and Karl Malden as a sleazy prospector. Also starring Karl Swenson, Virginia Gregg & Ben Piazza. 7/10

Captain Phillips (2013)

One of the most tense thrillers I've ever seen. The threat level is off the scale throughout and the highly emotionally charged ending brings it to a very fitting conclusion. One of Tom Hanks' all time top five performances I would say. 8/10

For Your Eyes Only, classic Bond and loved the main theme performed by Sheena Easton who's the singer to physical appear on a Bond film singing the intro 8.5/10.

The Return Of The Living Dead(1985)

A very funny sequel to Romero's Night Of The living Dead(1968).This time the military is blamed for the zombie outbreak.A great example of how a tounge in cheek, comedy horror should be done from the late and massively underrated Dan O'Bannon. Also featuring a great punk rock soundtrack.
