Naked Lunch(1991)

David Cronenberg directed and co-wrote the screenplay with William Burroughs based on Burroughs's own novel to create this semi-autobigraphical junkie's nightmare of a film.It features a superb central performance from Peter Weller. Some people were left stumped by the film's famous and extremely strange "interzone" sequences though.

Requiem For A Killer (2011) A contract killer is hired to 'rub out' an opera singer, but complications ensue... A stylish thriller, indeed despite clever moments, its a case of style over substance with a thin rather implausible plot. Starring Melanie Laurent, Clovis Cornillac, Tchneky Karyo ( the best role), Xavier Gallais & Christopher Stills 5.5/10

Devil's Knot (2013) This is the infamous case in 1993 of the West Memphis Three, so called Satanists charged with the ritual murder of three young boys. Colin Firth is the sceptical PI, and Reese Witherspoon mother of one of the murdered boys. On the plus side, there is an excellent, moving performance from Witherspoon and interesting observations on the bad handling of the trial by the police, and the general movement in placing the three suspects as guilty come what may, due to their interests and looks. On the negative side, the film does lean on Hollywood sentimentality at times, especially in some of the Witherspoon scenes, it doesn't need this, Reece has the acting chops to carry the scenes. Also, there has been a series of documentaries about this case, which may be a better way of presenting the material. Also starring Alessandro Nivola, James Hamrick, Collette Wolfe, Rex Linn & Bruce Greenwood 6/10

There are also 3 documentary films about this from Joe Berlinguer and the late Bruce Sinofsky.Paradise Lost :The Child Murders At Robin Hood Falls,Part 2 : Revelations and Part 3 : Purgatory.Unbelievable that those kids were accused of these crimes basically because they wore black jeans and listen to heavy music.

Marathon Man(1976)

John Schlesinger directs this suberb thriller written by William Goldman which was based on his own book.Laurence Olivier is truly menacing as the Nazi dentist who tortures an equally brilliant Dustin Hoffman. One of the best films of the seventies.

Hitchcock/Truffaut(2015) In 1962, French director Francois Truffaut met Alfred Hitchcock for a series of interviews which were to form the basis of a very influential book which helped to change the perception of Hitch from being thought of as merely a commercial director to an artist with great skill for using the cinema form. Against the background of his career and Truffaut's thoughts on him, various famous Hitch fans( Scorcese, David Fincher, Richard Linklater etc) discuss their thoughts on his films. A must see for Hitchcock & cinema fans 7.5/10

Swingers(1996)

Doug Liman's film was shot in 22 days for $250,000 but its guerilla style has made it an often imitated, cult favourite.A simple story about a group of struggling actors that move to Los Angeles to find fame and fortune.Sad sack Mike(John Favreau)is full of self doubt after a breakup and ultra confident but always loyal Trent(Vince Vaughn)steal the show, adlibbing almost all of the dialogue whilst the director simply takes it all in.The intense, sometimes intimate moments add a very visceral vibe, apart from the dated homages,it still holds up.Flash, funny and brilliantly acted.

Man Made Monster[aka The Atomic Monster](1941)

Lon Chaney plays a sideshow performer named "Dynamo Dan The Electric Man" whom a mad scientist played brilliantly by Lionel Atwill turns into a "electrobiologically driven" monster that can kill by touch.A very enjoyable sci fi thriller from The Wolf Man director,George Waggner.
