Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(1990)

Eastman and Laird's bizzare comic book creations enjoyed their first taste of live action mayhem in this safe but enjoyable mix of martial arts adventure and Bill and Ted type comedy.Jim Henson's world famous Creature Shop, whose dazzling animatronic creations still hold up today and look far more convincing than the CGI in the recent reboots.Director Steven Barron sticks closely to the principals of the comics and was smart enough to cast some great actors in the human roles.Elias Korea's is a hoot as Casey Jones and his interplay and chemistry with Judith Hoag as April O'Neil is a huge part of the films appeal when the four heroes aren't onscreen.Shame that the sequels didn't stick this formula, could have been an enjoyable and successful series of films and not the cold, heartless,CGI laden kiddy fare we get today.

The Overlanders(1946)

Based on actual events that happened during World War 2.Facing the dilemma of killing their cattle rather than leave them to the Japanese, a gang of desperate men drive their herd across Australia. An emotional and moving film featuring a very poignant turn from Chips Rafferty.

In Which We Serve(1942) After WW2 destroyer HMS Torrin is sunk, the sailors' stories are told in flashback. Written by Noel Coward, and co directed by Coward & David Lean, its this flashback device that makes the film, despite some cut glass upper accents and occasionally dated dialogue. Showing the men's home lives, people's attitude to the war and their time on the Torrin makes you invest in the characters, with some touching and witty moments. Starring Coward, John Miles, Bernard Miles, Kay Walsh, Celia Johnson,Richard Attenborough(his debut) and Michael Wilding 7.5/10

The Man Who Laughs(1928)

Paul Leni directs this adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel(1869).Conrad Veidt stars as Gwynplaine, who King James II has put in an iron maiden and permanently disfigured so that his face is always a hideous grin.A deeply disturbing, creepy but excellent film.

This film could have been the inspiration for the Joker in Batman.

As Financial Domination continues to grow, less enthusiasm is required when putting on a show.
