Maximum Conviction(2012)

A by the numbers actioner starring Steven Segal and Steve Austin. An ex black ops agent has to keep two female prisoners from being kidnapped by a gang of mercenaries.A few good fist fights and gunplay here and there can't hide the fact that this film is very average, not a patch on Segal's late 80s and early 90s work.Former pro wrestler Steve Austin carries the acting side of things with another solid and believable performance.

A Single Man (2009) Colin Firth turns in a top notch performance as a gay teacher in early 60s LA struggling to come to terms with the death of his lover. It was the directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford, which probably accounts for the interesting if occasionally over showy camerawork. The script is intelligent & witty and there's a fine soundtrack, a mixture of classical, opera and contemporary. Good acting support too from Julianne Moore,Matthew Goode & Nicholas Hoult. 7.5/10

The Vengeance Of Fu Manchu(1967)

Christopher Lee stars as the evil Fu Manchu, who plots the demise of his arch rival,Inspector Smith of Scotland Yard.Despite some clichéd and outdated views of the oriental, director Jeremy Summers manages to keep it all moving along nicely and gets another good performance from the late, great Christopher Lee.

Laxdale Hall(1952)

In a remote Scottish village, the residents that own cars get into a dispute with local authorities over the state of the roads and decide to boycott payments for its upkeep until a proper, safe road is built. An enjoyable comedy with great performances from Prunella Scales,Fulton MacKay and Ronald Squire.

Legend of the Werewolf(1975)

A boy is raised by wolves and then displayed as an attraction at a circus.Despite some pretty impressive makeup effects and the presence of greats such as Peter Cushing,Ron Moody and Hugh Griffith, director Freddie Francis cannot lift this above average.

Mindscape(2013) Mark Strong plays a man who is able to enter people's memories who is tasked with helping a troubled teenager, played by Taissa Farmiga. The main assets of this film are the lead performances & the neat 'memory' idea. Some twists in the story work, some don't. Also starring Brian Cox, Saskia Reeves, Richard Dillane & Indira Varma. 6/10

Metallica : Some Kind of Monster(2004)

An insightful documentary about the struggles that the world's most successful heavy metal band were dealing with in the period from 2001 to 2003.You don't even need to be a fan of their music to appreciate this as its more of a study about personal relationships and dealing with childhood problems that had been swept away and ignored.Joe Berlinguer and Bruce Sinofsky put the film together after recording over 2000 hours of footage.

Dark Waters (1944) Merle Oberon plays a survivor of an U Boat attack which kills her parents. Following some time in a sanitarium, she moves to live with her uncle and aunt in the bayou but her problems may just be starting. A pretty unoriginal story billed as a Gothic noir, some of the noirish photography does improve the film, but this is partly nullified by the poor print of the film(bit surprised Film Four showed it). Also starring Franchet Tone, Thomas Mitchell, Elisha Cook Jr, Fay Bainter & Rex Ingram 5/10
