A moving, intelligent and very funny comedy/drama co written by and starring Ivor Novello.A penniless Russian prince befriends a young woman named Ava(Ida Lupino)who shows him kindness and hospitality by inviting him home to live with herself and her parents.

7/10

Ida Lupino was an excellent actress born in South London to a famous music hall family, but moved to Hollywood in her teens and acted in quite a few film noirs/crime films. Later became an acclaimed director, and one of the few female ones.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People(1959)

Robert Stevenson directs Jimmy O'Dea as King Brian of the Leprechauns and Sean Connery as Michael McBride in this delightful Disney film based on the Darby O'Gill books by Herminie Templeton Kavanagh. The great Albert Sharpe played Darby O'Gill.Using the Schuffan Process(forced perspective creating the illusion of size differential)the film has great and prolonged scenes of Darby among the "little people."

Amazing Grace(2006) Ioan Gruffudd is outstanding as William Wilberforce, fighting to abolish the British slave trade in the early 19th century. He captures the devoutness, kindness and wit of the man, also the friendship between him and William Pitt The Younger, played by Benedict Cumberbatch is excellently portrayed. The script and storyline covers in very good detail his struggles and the complexities of the trade. The rest of the cast is top rate too, including Rufus Sewell,Michael Gambon, Toby Jones, Romola Garai, Youssou N'Dour, Albert Finney & Stephen Campbell Moore. 8/10

Cotton Queen(1937)

A decent comedy directed by Bernard Vorhaus about two rival cotton mill owners who end up working together to win a contract.Matters are then complicated when the siblings of the two rivals fall in love. With great acting all round from Will Fyffe,Stanley Hollaway and Jimmy Hanley.

7.5/10
