The Seventh Seal(Ingmar Bergman,1957)

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest(1975)

Milos Forman directed Jack Nicholson as petty crook Randle P McMurphy to an Oscar winning performance in this Michael Douglas produced masterpiece. When McMurphy arrives at the state mental hospital his contagious optimism and lust for life upsets the routine of Nurse Ratched played by Louise Fletcher who also won the Oscar for best actress. At first glance Nurse Ratched appears to be a soft spoken lady just doing her job but,she is soon revealed to be cooly monstrous.A battle of will soon ensues as she shows her true colours.Funny, moving and utterly engaging there's little wonder that this amazing adaptation of Ken Kesey's best seller won all five of the major academy awards, including best picture. It was also the inspiration behind Metallica's Welcome Home(Sanitarium) from the Master of Puppets album(1986)

Forbidden Planet(1956)

Walter Pidgeon,Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis all shine in this wonderful sci fi classic directed by Fred McLeod Wilcox.Underneath all the impressive(for the time)SFX it was greatly inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Grizzly(aka Killer Grizzly,1976)

William Girdler directs, what is essentially a film identical in plot to Jaws, but it takes place on land with an 18 foot tall grizzly bear instead of a great white shark.Atrocious acting and dialogue, but some nice cinematography in places

Alien Resurrection(1998)

The least favoured film of the entire franchise that was based on an terrible plot that revolved around cloning.Although Joss Whedon's original script posed some interesting ideas and questions, they were lost in translation by director Jean Pierre Jeunet who tried to make a stylish European style horror film, with not much real horror or tension in it.Despite an impressive cast,it's a huge letdown. The newborn alien which appears at the end was voted as the worst creature ever put on film by SFX magazine readers.
