The Day of The Triffids(1963)

Steve Sekely directed this slightly uneven version of John Wyndham's famous sci fi novel.Good work from leading man Howard Keel helps it along.

Hereafter(2010) three stories, set in the USA, Paris & London concerning life and death. Directed by Clint Eastwood, he gets fine performances from the likes of Matt Damon, Cecile De France, Lyndsey Marshall and Bryce Dallas Howard, sometimes moving and generally avoids sentimentality 6.5/10

Claws(1977)

4 hunters track a wounded Grizzly bear that has gone on a killing spree in a national park, some nice cinematography and wildlife shots are sadly let down by a truly dire script and really hammy acting.

My Darling Clementine (1946)

Henry Fonda stars as Wyatt Earp, who reluctantly has to fight a personal war against the Clantons who are responsible for the murder of his brother.A poetic and gripping western from director John Ford. The entire film is a metaphor for President Roosevelt's decision to bomb Japan in WW2.

The Deep End(2001) A mother covers up a death she thinks is caused by her son, but complications arise... A solid if occasionly implausible thriller with a strong central performance from Tilda Swinton. A remake of the 1949 film noir The Reckless Moment, which is better 6.5/10

Somebody Up There Likes Me(1956)

Paul Newman's career was actually stuttering at this point until he was cast as boxer Rocky Graziano.A classic rags to riches story sees Graziano as kid from the slums who ended up becoming middleweight champion of the world.Newman shines under the direction of Robert Wise and the critical acclaim he received for the film made him a star.

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas (2008) an absorbing drama in which the son of a concentration camp commander forms a friendship with a boy in the camp, against a background of a moral crisis in the commander's family. Good performances from the boys, Asa Butterfield and Jack Scanlon and an uncomfortable ending. 7.5/10

The Incredible Shrinking Man(1957)

Grant Williams stars as the title character in this classic directed by Jack Arnold based on the novel and screenplay by the legendary Richard Matheson. After exposure to a mysterious radioactive cloud Scott Carey shrinks smaller and smaller. The Incredible Shrinking Man is both serious and ultimately profound.Jack Arnold's exemplary direction of the intense battle between our tiny hero and a normal but now giant seeming spider inspired Peter Jackson with the scene in The Return of the King(2003)where Shelob is revealed.

Deadpool

Probably the funniest superhero/anti-hero film I've ever seen, which definitely lives up to the hype. The other superhero films coming out later on this year have a lot to live up to.

The film was let down though by a relatively weak storyline and a main villain who was pretty rubbish. However the scene has been set for Deadpool 2 so hopefully these problems will be resolved.

It seems that the sequel should be a certainty judging by the shed load of cash it's already taken in the short time period since being released.
