The Thing(2011)

The prelude to John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece of the same name shows the fate of the Norwegian camp seen in the Carpenter film.Although it lacks the suspense of the '82 version and suffers from some poor CGI in places, this is still a decent effort. A strong leading performance from the gorgeous Mary Elizabeth Winstead and good support from Joel Edgerton make it worth while.

The Entity(1982) a woman is attacked and molested by an invisible being, apparently partly based on a true story, its a bit overlong but has quite a few shocking/scary moments and strong central performance from Barbara Hershey. Surprised that Scorcese rates it higher than Psycho, though! 6/10

J. Edgar- 2011, directed by Clint Eastwood, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench.
a portrait of Edgar Hoover, the man who directed the FBI for 48 years.

7,5
enjoyable movie, I really liked it. Sure, it is not entirely accurate, historically speaking, many of the parts concerning the private life of Hoover are based on speculation, but after all it's a movie, not a documentary.
GREAT acting from DiCaprio, really. IMO his best performance (although the opinion might be unpopular).

year after year after year, I keep reading that the shows were better "in the past"... maybe they were never that great (except in the pioneering era)?

Dracula Untold 6/10 - another retelling of a classic horror story, ok but not as good as other monster remakes.

In The Valley Of Elah (2007) Tommy Lee Jones as a father investigating his son's disappearance following his return from duty in Iraq. A slow but absorbing and strongly acted film, with Susan Sarandon as Jones' wife and Charlize Theron as a police officer. 7/10

Paradise Alley(1978)

Sylvester Stallone, Armand Assante and Lee Canalito star as three brothers who turn to pro wrestling in order to make ends meat in the ghettos of 1940s New York. Some hokey lines here and there hinder the principal actors and wrestling is portrayed as a real sport(i.e not predetermined)but those little problems aside, this is enjoyable. The best thing about it though are the spectacular fights and wrestling scenes choreographed by Stallone and former pro wrestler, part time actor Terry Funk.

Enemy Mine(1985) A human (Dennis Quaid) and an alien (Louis Gossett) have to learn to work together when stranded on a ravaged planet. Very good special effects and fine acting sustain this film which has an average plot at times. It has a bit of heart too. Worth catching. 6.5/10
