The Equaliser 9/10 Excellent gritty movie based on the hit tv series of the 80's. Denzil Washington makes Robert McCall his own character.

St Vincent. 7/10.

Bill Murray is funny. Film inevitably gets a bit schmaltz though.
Usual structure of these type of films - a grumpy unlikeable guy is made slightly more "lovable" by a kid and his single mom who move in next door, and, through a series of mishaps need a "babysitter".

But as with all these films seemingly now, it can't break the formula .. there is the lurch into "seriousness" and attempted tugging on emotional heartstrings - and, oh no, here's the classic middle-of-the film "breaking of trust" sequence where everybody falls out with each other just as they are starting to get along - nobody ever sees this coming do they ? bladewave

And yes, swiftly followed by "the explanation" : the audience gets shown various things to "understand" and "empathise" with the reasons for Murray's slobbishness and misanthropy, and ultimately there is the inevitable and more-than-slightly-contrived "happy" ending where everything seems resolved all a bit too implausibly neatly.

Despite all that cliché though, some very funny moments of inappropriate one-liners and terrible child-minding behaviour by Murray, which are what stick in the memory. for me anyway.
