Full body scanners in airports
It has been announced by BAA that full body scanners will be introduced in at London's Heathrow airport as soon as practical.

I am interested in peoples views on this. So fire away folks.

Just to be sure here, so it's OK, if it stops terrorists, yes?

So low jacking all the cars in the UK, compulsory ID cards, a DNA database with everyone in the country's DNA on it and a country wide fingerprint database, are all OK, as long as they stop terrorists?

Full body scans and all the other things are a different level. Its a specific deterent. The others are a nation wide problem.

But they are all the same level.
All of the above "deterents" have been touted at one point or another as solutions to the problem of terrorism, the full body scanner is just the latest cure all solution and if brought in will constitute a further errosion of personal privacy.

Does anyone think for a minute that if these scanners are given the go ahead and installed in all UK airports as suggested that they will only be used in airports?

The reality is that they are too expensive to use in many places. Smile
Living in our society means that we have an erosion of our personal privacy. Not ideal and not something I am happy with but if I get attacked or my wife and children do I will want the bastards caught. And if CCTV helps then I will accept it.

Little update: Already, one of the operators has been warned about perving Rolleyes

What about scanning kids? I have seen many stories about airport workers circumventing security checks...it just seems a bit seedy.

Yes, they create some sort of a sense of security for some people. That's the main advantage I can see. They are also a slight deterrent, I suppose, but I'm not convinced these scanners will stop terrorists in the long term. Can they see inside a person, for example? eek
