Answer :

Derek sends a locked box with his letter to John.
John adds his lock to the box and returns it to Derek.
Derek gets the box, removes his lock and returns it to John.
John can now open box safely that has his lock on it.

Blimey my head hurts Wouldnt the phone have been easier?
