Cowboys 40 - 40 Packers O/T
The Packers were fortunate that pass hit the ground with 1 second left. Really poor sequence by the Packers in the Red Zone
Just wanted to know where do you guys stand on ties in the NFL?
Over here they are despised, I like them though. They are quirky and can add intrigue to the Playoff Picture late in the season. In the Packers case, it may come back to haunt them within the division
Besides, most of the the tie games I've seen, neither team deserved to win.
This one was different in that it was a back and forth offensive game. Usually they aren't like that
In the UK we are more than use to draws in our Football (soccer) for example. Under some circumstances a draw is a valued result. In our leagues we have a points system of 3 for a win 1 for a draw which is a good balance, previously it was 2 for a win & 1 for a draw which maybe gave too high a value for not winning, as it stands now it should promote more attack minded play.
As a cricket fan we can play for 5 days & still finish with a draw, which many in the US will think of as crazy.
As you've pointed out, a tie has interesting playoff implications. It doesn't necessarily mean a team with a tie on their record would mean they miss the playoffs, it's not a loss so it could be beneficial in some circumstances.
I'm not entirely sure that the overtime format is fit for purpose, I'd scrap it & just use it in the playoffs if required, & even then the format needs to be more equal and fair.
As I understand it, the coin toss for whoever gets to play offense first give that team a potential advantage. Yes both team get the chance of one each, but the initial possession could eat up most if not all of the 10 minutes overtime, leaving the team with the second possession an unequal amount of time to match or better the team who scored first.
Why not instead of having 10 minutes of potentially unequal overtime, just give each team one possession & a maximum of 5 minutes each. If they score quicker everyone gets to go home a little earlier, but the team with the 2nd possession still gets the maximum 5 minutes.
Another system you could use is just to make it a field goal shootout. Much like a penalty shootout in football (soccer). But sudden death. Start off at extra point range & move back 10 yards alternate teams kick until one team misses from a certain distance & the other team gets the win if they make that kick from the same distance. If both miss, re-kick from the same distance until either one is successful & the other fails or if both are successful, continue & move back another 10 yards.
Thoughts ?
