The winner gets to paint Alan Cumming, and trek off to New York for the privilege. This takes twice as long as the Mantel show did, and after completing the commission, he gifts Alan a 2nd painting of his own, which seemed a better work of art to me.

They did Landscapes in 2015 and 2016. Also, this 3rd series seems to have scrapped the effort involved in regional heats, and also cut the number of contestants from 12 to 9. Much else remains as before, though.

The lack of variation in location does mean the show can seem a bit samey. There seems more emphasis on the mix of professional artists and amateurs too.
