RE: USPGA
I remember on a different board back in 2004, the thread title "Lefty Wins A Major". Despite his undoubted success and ability, Mickelson's wins get this sense of "good ol' Phil, proving them wrong" or something.

So well done the old geezer, another record broken.

Props to the Mexican guy (Ancer?) who I believe shot the lowest round of the week too. And Lowry & Harrington for top 10 finishes I think.

Maybe if Phil had played a more conservative style of golf he would've 10 or 12 majors & not 6. But it wouldn't have been such a thrilling & exciting career. One of the most talented ever, to have played the game.
It has been noted that he has spent must less time with the press this week, which must become a bit of a bind, he's managed his time better. He has always been seem signing autographs long after he's finished a round, when you would see Tiger just walk past them all. The two are like chalk & cheese, is there any wonder why the didn't make a successful Ryder Cup pairing.
There really couldn't be a much more popular winner. Sad the here a few booing Koepka on the 1st tee.

This years European Ryder Cup captain Harrington would've given himself a nice headache with a win almost certainly a guaranteed qualification. Looked like he had a blast with Lowry.

To be fair to Tiger, maybe he (or someone else) will take Phil's mantle. I assume Jack Nicklaus was the previous Oldest Major Winner, so he held that for 35 years. Will the next move take that long? 50 is a bit of a leap from whatever age Jack was.

I read Sam Torrance's book a while back (he being Captain in 2002, the last time they had an extra year). I suspect Harrington would be better focusing on a good happy team mood than messing about with playing in the team, so I'm glad he's rejecting such suggestions.

^^ Only an issue if he'd won it. Still kicking myself that I didn't have a punt on Mickelson at 200-1.

Edit - I actually thought that this was just the commentators being mischievous, but he's obviously been asked & had to actually rule out playing. if he qualifies.
Would be quite big headed to pick yourself as a wildcard.

I'm sure Phil Has been offered the Ryder Cup captaincy before hasn't he?

It will be a big leap from 50 to the next oldest you probably would be looking to late 50's - early 60's for the next oldest winner of a major.

I would agree that Harrington would be far better off focusing on a good team mood but it is at the end of the day down who makes the team and what pairings work well. I think the interesting picks will be his wild card choices.

Huh He was 50. Nicklaus was 48 or something. If there were someone in their late 50s, early 60s, they would already have the record and we wouldn't be making a fuss at all.

It seems plausible that someone in the next 5 years (ie up to 2026) could become an older winner (Woods, for example).
