Alot of these movies are always a bit hit & miss (Believe,I've seen some stinkers) but this one....pretty good!

So Dark The Night (1946) Steven Geray stars as a Paris detective, who while on holiday in rural France, investigates the disappearance of a young couple. A rather lifeless first half of the film with stilted and awkward scenes, a dull script and a poor lead performance from Micheline Cheirel gives way to a far fetched but entertaining, noirish second half with an odd bit of shadowy cinematography and clever camerawork. Geray shines through the whole of the film with a sympathetic,rich,versatile performance. Also starring Eugene Borden,Ann Codee,Helen Freeman,Gregory Gaye,Jean Del Val and Louis Mercier. 5.5/10

The Captains

A documentary by William Shanter Interview all the actors that played Star Trek captains, a very interesting watch.

The Darkness (2016);

Not to be confused with the rock band of the same name that were around in the early noughties that paraded around in lycra outfits (I think they called them tiger-suits) on stage & sang with that high pitched shrill voice put out a few annoying songs then disappeared into obscurity shortly after (& aren't desperate enough to appear on CBB or I'm a Celebrity yet).

This film is a thriller of sorts starts off with a family visiting the sights around the grand canyon on holiday.What parents Peter (Kevin Bacon) & Bronny (Radha Mitchell) neglected to tell their kids beforehand is A;don't go wandering off alone & B;don't touch what doesn't belong to you.Young Autistic son Peter would never have taken his parents advice anyway & while wandering off on his own he stumbles across an Indian ritual site & finds some decorative stones,so nice in fact he decides to steal them & take them home with him as a holiday souvenir.Peter didn't actually read the memo beforehand that clearly states that anyone who steals these stones will unleash 5 shadow demons that will curse & torment your family leaving a trail of destruction & terror behind (& plenty of sooty hand-prints on the walls that will cost a small fortune in emulsion paint to fix).

Not a bad film tbh with great effects but completely lacked any scary or jump-out your-seat moments.The film seemed as if was trying to immitate the iconic Poltergeist film (in that young child contacting spirits that no-one else can see scenario) but failed. 4/10.

The Idealist(2015) Set in 1988 and then 1995,a Danish journalist attempts to reveal a nuclear 'cover up' in Greenland in 1968, instigated by both the Danish and US governments. A fairly even handed conspiracy thriller, cleverly mixing in real archive footage with the dramatic scenes. A very good performance from Peter Plauggborg as the determined journalist. Also starring Soren Malling,Arly Jover,Thomas Bo Larsen,Henrik Birch and Hans Henrik Clemensen. 7.5/10

Escape to Victory 1981 : gritty realist documentary-style depiction of true events during WWII when an Allied POW soccer team thrashed the Nazis in a propaganda match in Paris which changed the whole course of the war and led straight to D-Day....
no sorry I can't do this with a straight face : it's complete tosh.
How did this ever get made ?
Revealing probably for how Britain - pre Falklands War jingoism - was still desperately clinging to the wreckage of an image of former "greatness" in a time of economic doldrums and World Cup failure. At least they could stick it to Germany in the films !

Surely ripe for a Brexit-era remake now that the UK's picked up its ball sulkily from Europe and declared itself not to be playing anymore ?
They could remake it with CGI representations of the 1966 England team ?

^^^^ the clever thing about the film is it dream or reality. Paul Verhoeven did this on purpose which makes the film so good.

Big Trouble In Little China(1986)

An eighties cult classic from John Carpenter that brings the best of western cowboy films and fuses them together with martial arts action sequences.An utter failure on its release but bursting with quotable one liners,iconic moments and more ideas,creativity and ingenuity in a single scene than most Hollywood blockbusters mange in their entirety.All held together by the charm and charisma of Carpenter regular Kurt Russell as the clueless hero.

House Of Usher(1960)

Adapted by Richard Matheson from the Edgar Allan Poe story and directed by Roger Corman as a part of a series of Poe works that he brought to the big screen.Although cheap looking in places,Vincent Price saves the film with a strong lead turn as Roderick Usher.Who turned his wife insane after burying her alive.
