RE: Labour Leadership Contest
Seems appropriate to bounce this thread now we have another Leadership contest.

Looks like it will be a contest about Leadership skills rather than policies although the Trident debate in Parliament might add a bit of spice. Already today we've had a brick thrown through the window of Angela Eagle's constituency office so Corbyn's kinder more respectful politics contains a harder edge it seems Big Grin

In the spirit of the moment, I predict that bald Eagle having started this contest, will withdraw before the vote and leave others to fight it out Big Grin

All the names she's been calling Corbyn and no "The Eagle Has Slandered" headlines? For shame!

RE: Labour Leadership Contest
Lots of arguments going on about the NEC meeting that determined Corbyn should be on the voting paper. One NEC member has said people were intimidated and threatened. Seems the General Secretary was told he would be personally named in legal action by Corbyn's supporters and therefore would be personally liable if Corbyn won the legal action. Also reports that union members on the NEC were told they would be deselected if they voted against Corbyn.

Further arguments also about who is eligible to vote with the £3 members who previously registered it seems now going to have to pay £25 to be able to vote

The gentler politics also seems to be out of the window with McDonnell and a union leader captured on stage on Tuesday night swearing and ranting about the "coup leaders"

If bullying is what it takes to get obstinate people to face that they wasted 6 hours on a decision to let him on the ballot which should have taken 30 seconds, then..?

Corbyn and his supporters are the wounded party here. No amount of media bias the other way will change that.

RE: Labour Leadership Contest
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about - the extract of the rule book I saw on the BBC seems to clearly say that when there is no vacancy - which there isn't, Corbyn hasn't stepped down - then there is a requirement for any challenger to command a certain level of support in order to trigger an election. It does not say the current incumbent needs to do the same just to get on the ballot : they're the one in office defending the challenge, so they have to already BE on the ballot ?
But I realise that's a fairly common sense interpretation not a legalistic one.Rolleyes

Irrespective of the the rights or wrongs of whether Corbyn should be on the ballot paper the aggression of some Corbyn supporters surely cannot be acceptable in a democratic society. Female MP's who don't support Corbyn have been threatened with rape, "being Coxed" and warned that the aggressors know where they live.

I don't see this ending in anything but a split in the Labour Party and a breakaway party being formed unless Corbyn loses the election (which I don't think he will)
