It was a bit like a David v Goliath Ladies final

But surprisingly Angelique Kerber beat Serena William 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the Australian Open chamionship

Even more surprising, well to me at least, was seeing Serena so gracious in defeat.

An outstanding victory for Kerber.
Williams did not play at all badly and did not self destruct as in some previous final losses.
She was just being matched blow for blow by an inspired Kerber who played the best I have ever seen her play in a slam.
All credit to the American though who responded to her defeat with immense humility, dignity and grace.
I feel sure Serena will win more slams, she is still the most consistent player out there.

Yeah, Serena will likely overtake Steffi's record before this Christmas.

But still pretty funny that Kerber won Big Grin Well done her.

Also to Jamie Murray, too Big Grin

RE: Tennis Discussion Thread
So Murray comes up short once again.
Djokovic played outstanding tennis as did Murray at times but the consistency of the Serb was too much.
Once again Murray will have cause to reflect on some missed opportunities at key moments.
At the very highest level you get few opportunities to impact the match and the opponent.
Murray came up short once again in the clutch moments and paid the price.
A harsh truth indeed but when playing Djokovic those few chances must be seized on.
A superb slam again though from the Serb.
Every bit the best player on the planet right now.

I don't think it's a disgrace when Djokovic is an ATG (ditto Federer & Nadal). 5 losses in Aussie Open finals is 5 more than most ever manage.

RE: Tennis Discussion Thread
Murray went into match at a severe disadvantage having has a tough 5 set Semi final and a day less to recover. Both women's Semi finals were played on same day so why the Australian Open has continued with this schedule of giving the players in top half of Mens draw this unfair advantage baffles me. Even the US Open have stopped this practise leaving Australian Open as only Slam to continue this unfaiir scheduling
