I hate being drawn into debates about conspiracy theories, because debunking the theory requires you to acknowledge the theory, which only spreads the theory. That's the insidious power of the conspiracy theory.

What is the MSM supposed to do?

They can't ignore the whole QAnon thing if Trump retweets their insane theories and uses their slogan in rallies. But they can't commend or congratulate Trump for fighting a secret cabal of pedophiles if it doesn't exist -- it'd be like congratulating him for slaying dragons. Granted, it'd be awful to live in a world swarming with dragons and I'd want the American president to slay them -- but if there are no dragons, then he's just an idiot with a sword.

It shouldn't hurt anyone that Trump is potentially fighting paedos somewhere, sorry. And retweets don't automatically mean endorsements of tweets, he just loves to put out things on Twitter because that's what he does QAnon is harmless to complain about anyway. If he was retweeting terrorist propaganda than maybe the media would have a point.

This came up in the earliest days of his presidency and Sean Spicer cleared it up: "The President is the President of the United States, so [his tweets] are considered official statements by the President of the United States".

That line has been repeated several times since.

That's why the MSM can't ignore a single tweet -- these are all 'official' pronouncements from the leader of the Executive Branch.

Let's be clear though -- I really don't believe that even Trump believes a word of that QAnon horseshit. I don't think he's a nut with a sword slaying imaginary dragons. But I do think he's clever enough to know that the more dust you throw in the air, the less easy it is for people to separate fact from fiction.

He doesn't really care if anyone believes QAnon or Proud Boys or any other nutty fringe group. He just wants you to NOT believe the New York Times, CNN, Chris Wallace, Mitt Romney or Anthony Fauci. Every day of his presidency has been an assault on fact, science, journalism and truth, with but a single purpose: to make sure that his supporters ONLY believe him.

That way he can ladle out whatever daily portion of bullshit he produces to serve his own needs -- for example: antifa is lighting cities on fire.
