You watch news shows and you see intellectuals that are well versed in the subject matter & politics in general and they keep asking what is Trump's strategy? I can't help but wonder if it is because they have been in politics for so long that they cannot fathom politicians not working on a train of thought that has some sense of logic or end goal.

I do think it's highly likely he is trying to distract from impeachment headlines which in itself amazing, The President of The United States carries out a possibly illegal assassination of the number 2 man in the Iranian Regime, an adversary of The US & its allies, that has power & influence across a volatile region that could lead to dangerous consequences easily fatal to distract from the headlines of his own impeachment

Additional reasons are:

everything he does is to win re-election. He is always campaigning, always holding rallies, everything he does is to play to his base who want a strongman and this bolsters that image

Obama killed Bin Laden, Trump killed al-Baghdadi he probably looked at this and thought Trump 2 Obama 1
