How Lenny Henry did not after all have to die to allow other stand-ups "of colour" to get their own shows.

Star Trek Voyager Ep 14 “Faces” Season 1

Lt Torres is divided into two beings when a Vidiian scientist kidnaps her so one version of her is Klingon and other version human. The really sick thing about the Ep is when that Vidiian scientist grafts one of voyager crew members faces on to his own that was nasty.

Charlie Brooker's Antiviral Wipe
The last 4-5 months, and jabs about the NHS funding lie from the Brexit bus. Amusing self-awareness that his own Dark Mirror is often more alarmist about people than the reality has been (yet).

Natural World - Animal House
BBC 2011

An interesting look at animal architects with an Attenborough voiceover.

Beavers, burrowing mammals, birds which suspend their nests under leaves using spider webs are all featured as is the leafcutter ant which excavates about 40 tons of soil to create huge fungus farm colonies containing over ten million individuals.

Another insect featured is the Japanese giant hornet dubbed by the press as the "murder hornet". It builds nests out of wood pulp like other wasps and keeps the colony at an even temperature of 28-32C. One of the thermoregulatory mechanisms is thought to relate to the silk coccoons that the larvae spin out of silk. The coccoons act as electrical capacitors which can discharge producing heat when the ambient temperature drops.

The Japanese hornet has been in the news recently as some have been found in North America where they have been destoying honeybee colonies. The Japanese honeybees combat the hornet in a unique manner. When a hornet scout is detected, dozens of bees wait just inside the hive entrance. When the hornet enters they surround it with a ball of bees which raises the temperature and carbon dioxide concentration and kills the invader. The European and North American bees don't have this defense mechanism. These wasps are also dangerous to humans, their sting is agonising and realatively few could be enough to kill even without anaphylactic shock.

Dennis Miller Plus One - Bret Michaels
He's got an autobiography out, and to prove how literate rock stars are, it's full of pictures.

Flying Through Time - Catalina
2004 Forces TV

The first half has a brief look at two more modern maritime patrol aircraft, the Orion and the Nimrod, before the Catalina is examined in slightly more detail.

The Consolidated Catalina first flew in the mid thirties as a pure flying boat with an amphibious version later developed during the war. Over 700 out of the 4,000 built served in the RAF, mostly patrolling the oceans around Africa and Asia with a smaller number in Coastal Command based in the UK. The Catalina was very slow but its range and endurance were important for the role of protecting shipping from u-boats. Over thirty u-boats were sunk by Catalinas with two of the pilots, John Cruickshank and David Hornell, receiving the Victoria Cross, the latter posthumously.

After the Bismarck sank the Hood in May 1941 it was a Catalina flying from Lough Erne in Fermanagh that found it and shadowed it until it could be attacked and sunk by the Royal Navy.

Quite a hopeful series, overall.
