Cymry ar Gynfas (Welsh on canvas)
A series where 6 Welsh artists paint portraits of 6 Welsh icons (one each). This week, Meirion Jones paints Max Boyce.

Art of Spain
Episode 2 - The Dark Heart

Andrew Graham-Dixon looks at the golden age of Spanish art in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the late 16th century Spain was the most powerful country in the world but its art was hidebound by the religious fundamentalism which pervaded it. Painters like El Greco and De Ribera had to conform to strict rules which restricted them to portraying purely Christian themes in prescribed ways.
In the mid 17th century Spanish influence was declining but painters such as Velasquez and Zurbaran were more able to practice their art with fewer restrictions.

Two of the paintings examined are El Greco's The Martyrdom of Saint Maurice and Velasquez's Las Meninas.

I'm enjoying this series, for the history as much as the art.

Person of Interest "Pilot" episode, one of my all time favourite shows, started rewatching it and I have to say it's a very good episode, most pilot episodes aren't great but this was quality.

Dr Michael Hudson chats about how bad things are going to get (very, of course).

Redacted Tonight
How climate change relates to capitalism, how Bernie Sanders got robbed but still shouldn't have endorsed Joe Biden, and how two pandas have finally mated after 10 years because their zoo is shut. Plus, a fatal reliance on COBOL.

RE: What TV show did you last watch?
Flying Through Time
Episode One - Aircraft Carriers and the Hellcat

Forces TV, 24 min, made by Vortex Entertainment

This is the first one of this series that I've watched and It looks like another example of the poundshop documentaries that populate the nether regions of the EPG, cobbled together from stock footage and a voiceover cribbed from standard reference sources.

24 minutes is insufficient to do justice to any subject and they should have devoted the whole thing to the Hellcat which was one of the most important planes of WWII. Instead they began with a potted history of early carriers and at the end tagged on a few minutes about a completely unrelated plane, the A-6 Intruder.

The US Navy needed a carrier fighter that could outperform the Japanese Zero and the Grumman F-6 Hellcat was the solution. Over 12,000 were produced in less than three years in one factory. It was easy to fly, rugged, easy to maintain and faster than the zero. Out of 6,477 combat kills recorded by the US Navy, 5,163 were registered by the F-6, all of them in the last two years of the war. Over a thousand were also in Royal Navy service and saw action off Norway and in the Mediterranean.
