Europe, Referendum & Brexit (formerly Europe..IN or OUT??)

For much of Tuesday "I Stand With Bercow" and "Bercow National Hero" were both trending on Twitter. He was getting a lot of love, from both sides of the debate.

When the history of Brexit gets to be written, Bercow will be just about the only person in parliament who will come out of it with any credit.

I would have thought that leavers would be quite happy with Bercow's decision as if May can't get an extension fromEurooe then we will leave on March 29th without a deal. Something many of them seem to want.

i agree. i have no love for the man, seems to court the attention. but when it comes to brexit, i think he's realised his position in this complete mess an wants history to look at him kindly.

I can understand why many people see Bercow as a hero, but it's the failings of government which have cast him in that role. I don't blame him for basking in the limelight either, because again it's the failings of goverment which have allowed him to do that. However, when people accuse him of bias towards the remain side in the Brexit debate, it's worth remembering that without Bercow there probably wouldn't have been a Brexit referendum in the first place.

In May 2013 he allowed a debate by Eurosceptic Tory MPs calling for a referendum on UK membership of the EU, a 3rd amendment to the Queen's speech when past practice was that only 2 amendments to a Queen’s Speech are accepted. Benefiting from Bercow's ruling, the amendment gained 133 votes - enough to convince David Cameron that he should support a referendum in order to keep his party together. Cameron announced the Brexit referendum later that year.

Only reason why he hangs on to the speakers chair is because he knows his constituents hate him so because speakers seat isnt contested then he has a job for life

Doubt he will be looked on favourly if he is responsible for us crashing out

Bercow has greatly increased his local vote during his time as speaker. When he first became speaker his Buckingham constituency gave him 23,000 votes at the following general election, but the last 2 elections have seen him top 34,000 votes.

Over the last 2 elections the Buckingham constituency has also had a higher voting turnout than the national average, despite the limited choice of candidates to vote for.

He has because no other major party puts a candidate up against him because he is the bloody Speaker !!

I can see the tories ending that convention next GE
