Cracking under pressure

it's not silly - it's fact. Ferguson is still winning championships after 20 years - Benitez came close one year and buckled under the pressure. the next season his team imploded under the expectation. anyone that saw Wenger on the touchline and in post match interviews could see the toll it took on him when Arsenal were last challenging.

you can say what you want about Ferguson banning journalists and walking out of press conferences but it doesn't mean a thing when he keeps winning trophies. you might not like him but no-one can question his record without looking foolish

West Brom came back from 3 goals down to draw against us last season, so we have to keep playing like we have been in the first half to grab the three points today

Yes they do, he's only ever managed one club outside of his two team nation. if he'd have left your lot 6 years ago & won titles elsewhere then fair enough but he's only done it at one club.

Yeah look at his trophies... I've heard it all before but a 'Great' moden day manager wins trophies or has success in various countries i.e Carlo Ancelotti,
José Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, Manuel Pellegrini to name but a few.

No I'm not saying he's not in the bracket of these managers but most of his success came in the 90's when it was a 1 or 2 team league with no challenges.

I'm guessing your just another one tone Manc.

looking at your signature i could say the same about you, but i've just sorted one situation with a Liverpool fan and am not looking to get myself into another so lets put the rivalry aside and just say this:

when he was manager of Aberdeen - Aberdeen! - he managed to come out on top against the Old Firm which is an achievement in any era and they beat Real Madrid - Real Madrid! - in the Cup Winners Cup final.

and when you look at how far behind United were when he took over and the difficulty Arsenal and Chelsea have had sustaining success, rivalry aside, you can't deny it is impressive

Mitchell - I don't really get what you're saying. I'm by no means a Manc, nor am I particularly a fan of Old Red Nose but to actually say you can question his achievements is one of the most bizarre comments I've ever read.

Both Paisley and Shankley have fantastic reputations and done superb at Liverpool in their time, but no one questions either of them because they've only won things at Liverpool.

I never said it wasn't impressive but I just don't buy into people saying he's the greatest manager of all time, most of his success has come at a time when there was barely any challenge. Nor do I count Chelsea as a sucsess with the £2b Roman's spent yes they've won trophies but they'll be at a loss if you compare the winning money to the outlay.

I'm not as sharp tongued as my old chum & don't mind the forum rivalry aslong as it stays clean as it's come to a head before with your lot & they start bringing up shit they shouldn't.

Oh by the wah I mentioned the Roman empire so get ready for Fernando's boyfriend Phoenix to rise from the £2b worth of ashes....

Money_Shot I don't get what your saying either as I clearly wasn't talking to you, come on lad open your eyes.

Bob & Bill didn't manage in the present, Fergie's still here, I'm not questioning his success, just saying I personally don't buy it like most as it all came in a point of English football where they where the only club that were capable & in the last few seasons when the golden era of the class of 93 have started to retire they look like anyother team in the league but due to their years of dominance some teams that play them still do so with that 90's fear which clearly is no longer there.

RE: Football Banter
well the Greatest Manager of All Time is a debate that could go on forever! i could be biased, but my opinion would also be affected by my age and the era i've grown up in.

i'm not sure i agree with you about the lack of competition United have faced, because we've come up against Blackburn & Chelsea sides that have had a lot of money thrown at them in a short space of time - i still think stopping Chelsea from dominating has been an achievement in itself. Newcastle had a great side in '96 and then there is Arsenal who had a formidable side for several years.

we're doing it again against City when most people think only one or two of our players would get in the their side. yes, it isn't the strongest side we've had in recent years, but like a lot of teams, we are currently in transition. you cited Fergie only having managed the one big club as a negative, but i think it's a positive - maintaining success for so long with one team.

the fact that United are still able to challenge for trophies whilst being in transition is huge and i think it has affected Chelsea. i think Abramovich looks at United and thinks 'well they are still winning trophies while overhauling their team, so why can't we?' it's an unrealistic expectation and only possible because Fergie has been there for so long.

Abramovich has short-term vision, but expects long-term success! Huh
