It does make it a foul under the rules of football. It constitutes a jump towards his opponent, which is punishable with a direct free kick. Jumping for a header is not a problem, as the player in that case is not jumping towards an opponent.

imho he didn't jump at the ball or the player he slid. it was a robust derbyday tackle! watch the second and third replays in this clip and honestly tell me he deserved to be sent off! i think the biggest give-away is nani's lack of complaint, he wasn't even looking for a foul!

Its a perfect challange and the way Rooney starts bahaveing is a disgrace....

Trying to get a player sent off...

It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact. Both feet leave the ground and in football that is a jump.

frank "slow" lampard should have been sent off for his tackle in the last round of pl games. dennis irwin in a champions league take a player out by studding him in the knee it should have a straight red but fergie subbed him straight away.

like i said in previous yellow card on its own harsh enough and red card is too harsh where as a yellow card and 10minutes in a "sinbin" would be a fair punishment.

apparently scholes come back was after failed attempts by fergie in getting lampard.

cantona is trying to be president of france.how much would fergie give to have cantona back in his team along with solskjaer.

when you slide both feet can leave the ground! they even have a name for it, a sliding tackle. not a jumping tackle. you can see it your way and you will never convince me that it was a sending off. i think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Man City's appeal against Kompany's red card has been dismissed. The FA have ruled that there is nothing to suggest that Kompany's red card was a wrong decision and as a result Kompany will now start a 4 match ban.

no surprise there after they upheld bartons. the thing that annoys me is lampard will escape punishment after his disgraceful potential career ender!
