Simple answer, because England's chances of doing well in the tournament depend almost entirely on a fully-fit in-form Rooney. Or at least that's the view of the FA.

I personally think it's incredibly hypocritical of the F.A to even contemplate appealing this ban,as an association they have a three game ban for violent conduct (which is what Rooney was sent for) and if a club has the audacity to challenge the ban,the player then gets an additional 1 game ban purely for asking the question......talk about double standards.
It doesn't make a blind bit of difference whether Rooney plays or not,England haven't got a hope in hell of winning Euro 2012.

I'm gonna predict the future a bit here.

In 9 months time when England once again fail to do anything worthwhile in a tournament, the same above posters will blame Rooney for England's piss poor performance in said finals even though he didn't even play

Fifa ban England players wearing Poppies on their shirts for the friendly against Spain.

just reed it. shameless and disgraceful. the fa should give the players jsut before kick off a shirt with the poppy on. how is the poppy appeal political, religious or commercial? it's a charity that does at a lot of fantastic work for veterans of war and families of deceased armed forces servicemen. what next fifa denies that the halocaust?

I AGREE 100%. Does Fifa ever recognise the sacrifices ordinary men ansd women in armed forces around the world make for their respective countries? i think not.

However England set up the team to accommodate and cater for Rooney. This I believe is where we go wrong as we don't actually play to our strengths, just our strength. As Rooney's international record speaks volumes for a player so pandered for I hope the team find a formula without him and he becomes an impact sub.
I am personally a strong believer of the most in form XI should play, not the biggest XI names. It is a crying shame that in recent years it has never been the case and players play off their reputations.

I would like, if the F.A actually had any balls, sack Crappello now, get a new coach installed who is going to be the boss for the 2014 world cup, get him to now prepare for that. Like Germany in the last tournament, bleed through the youngsters and build a team for the future that will be able to compete for World Cup in 2014 and the Euro's in 2016.

Rather then the the tail end of the so called "golden generation"

What you forgot was the the FA got rid of Crapello's get out clause in his contract before S. Africa!! Yet on the other hand, I think what
our players need to realise is that they need to stop pussy footing
around on the pitch at times and start attacking other teams, in other words have some balls and have a go!! if they did put a new manager before Euro 2012 and prepare for Brazil 2014, then I think Beckham should have behind the scenes role somewhere. Then again, if there was GB team at the Olympics then that should be the starting point for other younger England players to make their international
bow.

RE: Football Banter
so the fa are givin Antolin Alcaraz of wigan fc a 3 match ban for spitting at a wolves player huh? at first i though it was just a melee until they show another clip from a different tv cam, shame on alcaraz annoyed ; no doubt his behaviour pissed off a few angry wolves players and fans, my view they should ban him from football for life for something so disgusting, no doubt his manager roberto martinez will defend his player & alcaraz said he did nothing wrong - well tv pictures say otherwise. alcaraz seriously need to grow up and stop throwin his toyz out the pram like a little toddler. this reminds me of the footballer that spat in adrian mutu's ear when he was playin for chelsea than that player got sent off. it bad enough spittin still happens in our society, it should never be seen on a football pitch Smile

RE: Football Banter
I'm seething more about the fact that the FA have appealed the Rooney 3 game ban for needlessly lashing out at a player, when our 'keeper at the weekend commits an innocent foul outside the box, receives a red and a 3 game ban as well. Just stick of double fucking standards!

The spitting thing is a bone of contention for many, but let's be honest, spitting is unlikely to end a players career. Don't get me wrong it is a disguising thing to do and I hate it, it just makes me laugh how hit up people get about it. Players make horrific challenges (Roy Keane for instance) and end up with the same sentence as a spitter ! I know which I would prefer to be on the receiving end of.
