Nope, it won't happen in the foreseeable future, it's just Richard Bevan doing his usual "The end of the world is nigh" act. The FA wouldn't allow it, the fans certainly wouldn't allow it and I'm not sure the broadcasters would be happy either.

I think the broadcasters would go for it though. I'm sure they'd love big stadiums with packed crowds as it sends the right message out across the world that their product is best. That's the worst thing, football is fast becoming a "product!"

Stillroom - I don't think it would change football as I know it personally, I will still be watching Aldershot play Accrington or Barrow on a freezing cold January night......so I'll sleep well in the knowledge that we will never have to worry about being elected to join the Premier league Wink Tongue

Rickhardo - You are right about the FA. They have the power to veto any decision made by the Premier League. It takes 14 chairman to pass a vote, but it still needs to get by the FA. I would hope common sense would prevail, but then Steve Mcclaren did get a job and Crapello is still in one so who knows!

I just see is as a ridiculous idea because it'll mean teams in the lower division will never have the chance of getting into the Premier League! I'm sure people who are fans of teams in the Championship etc love watching them play, but I bet they love the possibility of going up into the Premier League too, with that gone, what do they really have to look forward to?

It also means the worse teams in the Premier League have nothing to worry about in terms of improving as they will always remain in the league regardless of how many points they will get!

Such a dumb idea, will never happen

I think it's a great idea personally...next all we need to do is reduce the number of goalposts on a pitch and replace the football with a anvil

I think the broadcasters would rather the fans were at home watching rather than in the stadiums. That said, I think the two figures run in tandem - the more exciting or popular a game is, the more people who attend and watch on TV.

One of the aspects of football that makes it popular is the excitement factor. Despite the top of the premier league often being predictable and sometimes a little uninteresting towards the end of a season, the battle for escaping relegation always provides excitement right until the last game of the season. As does promotion from the Championship - to the last game of the season and beyond. I would imagine that the playoffs from the Championship and other divisions primarily exist because of the broadcasters. Putting an end to relegation from the premiership would reduce the level of revenue the clubs could secure from the broadcasters.

RE: Football Banter
Th FA need to be bold here and realise that the end of relegation from the Premier League & promotion from the Championship would be the final nail in football's coffin, if it ever happened. British football has been the most unique and maybe respected league in the world, with it's unique promotion and relegation system, it's what teams in the Championship strive for at the end of the season, that prized place into the top tier of British football. The foreign owners need to wise up and realise that:-
A) They can't tinker with somethnig that doesn't belong to them.
B) Show respect to the traditions and history of how the game is played in this country. If they don't like it, they can pull their money out and leave British football alone. or accept that they should have no say in the running of the game in this country. I don't care how many x millions of dollars some people are prepared to put into the clubs, but the one thing they shouldn't do is destroy our football's finest traditions.
