RE: Olympics
It has been a joy to watch the London Olympics rewind shows these last few days.
The replay of the Opening Ceremony on Friday night was just amazing to watch again.
I remember thinking back in 2012 that I had never seen a lighting of an Olympic flame as beautiful or stylish as that.
The same view still holds true now.

Super Saturday. Oh my word.
Super Saturday. What a day for British sport.
To see that replayed yesterday sent tingles running through me.
The way it played out for one lady in particular will resonate with me to my dying day.
Jessica Ennis (as she was then).
The poster girl of the Games.
The favourite to win the Heptathlon.
She delivered. Big time.
80,000 home fans roaring her over the line to Gold in the concluding 800m before her celebrations could begin.
But it was her fairytale picture book medal ceremony that really did it for me.
The very last act of the entire day.
The very same 80,000 people that roared in appreciation earlier could get to their feet in unison to do so again as the Gold medal was duly placed around her neck.
Then they proceed to belt out the national anthem in her honour.
What a moment.
What a night.
What an amazing memory Heart.

RE: Olympics
Fresh doubts over games arise as Japen extends "State of emergency" which was due to be lifted on Monday. Now it seems many must be thinking will the Games will go ahead even now (we're are now at 100 days mark) and would athletes even if they are vaccinated would they want to perform ath the highest level in empty arenas?

Thev IOC still wants the games to go ahead but i think any crediblity in thwm will likely be lost if they do continue. If anything then they havw to find ways to include maybew even awarding olympic medals at individual sporting events where possible. I was say it is a huge risk to put the Games on, even now.

RE: Olympics
With cases in Tokyo steadily rising and increasing numbers of positive tests in and around the Olympic village there has to still be some doubt as to whether the Games will go ahead even now.

The head of the organising committee has not been able to rule out a last minute cancellation in the event of a surge in cases.

A decision really needs to be made swiftly in the interests of the health and welfare of athletes, entourages, officials and volunteers.
The scenario of starting the Games and then terminating part of the way through would cause mayhem.

There are to be little or no spectators allowed in as I understand it so this would be very much a Games for the athletes if it goes ahead. At the moment the athletes seem to still want to compete on the basis of training so hard for so long to be ready for the once in four year opportunity (in this case 5) which some of them may never get again.

But even as a huge fan and lover of the Olympic Games and much as I respect the Olympic dreams of so many athletes I do wonder whether continuing is really the right thing to do? Huh

RE: Olympics
Would it really have been too much hard work to just put the Olympics back to 2022, and then the Commonwealth Games back to 2024, and so on? The rush to get these events done with, in the pretence that all will appear to be back to normal, is bloody insane.

Almost as bloody insane as that BBC trail with its peculiar cyan citiscapes rubbish.

I think the IOC & Japanese economy would have taken a huge financial hit if the games didn't go ahead, I think that was the line taken when the games were originally coancelled at the time.

Postponement is not cancellation. Yes, a 2 year wait is a shame,, but this is an unprecedented global crisis, and besides, given the sackings of people involved in things, maybe Japan needed a bit longer to get its house in order?
