Suarez didn't text numerous people like Malckay MacK K Kay saying things like there's too many blacks or mocking religion or making jokes about peoples sexuality

It is if you intend it to be racist. Suarez was found guilty of intentionally and knowingly making a racist remark and doing it 7 times.

I never understood this "cultural difference" defense. I don't doubt that that distinction is true, by the way, but so what?

If I go to China or Saudi Arabia or Uruguay and make some horrible gaff, then I'm a post-imperial dick because I didn't understand the local culture. But if someone comes here and gets criticized for doing something that I think is wrong, then I'm still a dick because I don't understand foreign cultures?

Surely, it should be 'home field advantage'. Everyone should behave according to prevailing local customs. And if someone slips up -- e.g. by using a term 'of affection' that is locally considered 'racist' -- then they are, at a minimum, guilty of not abiding by local rules and norms. Take your punishment like a man instead of falling back on woe-is-me, no-one-understands-me nonsense. If I can be caned in Singapore for vandalism or jailed in Dubai for kissing in public, then Luis Suarez can surely be banned in England for making racist remarks, irrespective of what he claims to have thought that they really meant.

But it is all academic anyway, as I can't imagine in what possible context -- least of all in the heat of a competitive match! -- Luis Suarez might want to refer to Patrice Evra as "bro" or "mate".

Give me a break, Fernandez. I am a big fan of your provocative, rabble-rousing and always entertaining posts. But you are really at risk of defending the indefensible here.

I am not racist at all, I hate people who are Racist, they should be beaten, I said it when the whole Suarez thing happened I genuinely believe that it was a misunderstanding, and not because he was a Liverpool player, but because he had not long lived here, could hardly speak any english, I was once in that position and know how hard it is to learn and realise the differences in cultures after living in 4 countries around the world. And like I said in South America the term "negro" is not seen as being racist, considering Suarez's Grandfather is Black too and many of his team mates i don't think for 1 minute he meant it in a Racist way. Anyway I went over all this 2 years ago and i'm not saying any more on it...

As for Malckay Mackay and the other guy involved, there is no excuse what so ever for them, both from Britain, lived here all their lives, brought up and educated what is right and wrong and know the culture.

Not only were they being Racist they were also making fun of religion and being Sexist, hopefully with all the evidence there in black and white text, over 4000 messages apparently as proof they completely throw the book and make a clear example how Racism will not be tolerated, and NOT let him off lightly like they did with John Terry after he was seen calling Ferdinand "black bastard"..

My point was simply that the whole "cultural difference" argument might be an explanation for what he did, but it is not an excuse. As for Suarez, you don't have to be a racist to do something racist -- which is what he did. And he got caught. So he is probably less of a racist than he as idiot.

And lest it be perceived that I am the one who re-hashed a tired debate from two years ago, may I remind you that I simply responded to your comment from 6 posts ago. Yesterday evening to be specific.

Anyway..

Both cases are different, in my opinion Mackays case is worse. Racist, Sexist, and Religious discrimination so his punishment should be harder than Suarez & John Terry. Yes Mackay has apologised for it and so he should, but that should not get him off, he should still be punished.

I see Alex McLeish has signed a two year contract with Genk. Thing is will the Belgian press understand him?
