RE: Tennis Discussion Thread
Caroline Wozniacki needs to concentrate more on her own performances rather than moaning about where other players are playing. If she had played to her best, she could and would have easily beaten Makarova, regardless of what court she's been allocated. It's unlike her to be so outspoken and I believe it was that loss of concentration that accelerated her defeat.

Federer found a way to get it done again. Five sets again required suggests all is not 100% - perhaps that back injury has returned. I'd still back him to make the semi final where I think this time Nadal will be too solid for him. Having said that, Nadal had his own troubles against Taro Daniel. There's definitely something brewing among the next generation stars - they're all showing more determination this year to really give the established names difficulty.

Speaking of next generation, Shapovalov vs Edmund in the third round today should showcase the abilities of two players very much in that category. With the draw in that half looking very open, I believe it's an excellent opportunity for whoever wins to make a first grand slam quarter final.

RE: Tennis Discussion Thread
The semi-final line up is complete at the US Open.

Men's quarter finals results:-

Rafael Nadal def Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-2
Juan Martin Del Potro def Roger Federer 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4
Kevin Anderson def Sam Querrey 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6
Pablo Carreno Busta def Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4, 6-2

Women's quarter finals results:-

Coco Vandeweghe def Karolina Pliskova 7-6, 6-3
Madison Keys def Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3
Venus Williams def Petra Kvitova 6-3, 3-6, 7-6
Sloane Stephens def Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 3-6, 7-6

So the women's semi finals has an all American line up for the first time since 1981; Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer still will not meet at the US Open; and Kevin Anderson and Pablo Carreno Busta both not only will play in their first Grand Slam semi-final but we are guaranteed a new slam finalist.

I'd pick a Nadal v Anderson men's final and Keys v Venus women's final. However with all the surprises in this year's tournament, predicting anything is a dangerous exercise.

Women's semi-final day on Thursday and the men's on Friday.

Seems like Federer's early round struggles caught up with him, but well done to Del Potro all the same. Interesting to see some newer names coming through in both draws though.

With Andly 'not likely to play again' this season, due to his ongoing hip injury where will he be ranked for the start of next season? (As I assume Nadal will likely regain No.1 spot) And even if rest doesn't cure it, & he does have surgery on his hip I would assume Melbourne would be almost out of the question for his participation give the time length for recovery from surgery (if it is needed).

Andy is targeting Brisbane tournament to start 2018 season as his comeback other than his charity event in Glasgow.

He will likely be ranked around about 17 so could face the likes of Federer or Nadal in 2nd or 3rd round of Australian Open

RE: Tennis Discussion Thread
^^ Yes will be a tough task for Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic for that matter, to work their way back to the top end of the rankings when they return. They'll no doubt be some tough draws in grand slams.

But Del Potro, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys have shown what can be done after injury layoffs and proved that getting back to the top of the game is achievable given the right work ethic. I'm sure Andy and Novak aren't ready for the retirement home just yet - Roger and Rafa are still competing for slams.

2018's looking to be an exciting time with the veterans remaining competitive and the new generation knocking on the door.

Go Sloane Smile
I didn't think that anyone could beat Venus Williams. But Miss Stephens managed it in 3 sets
