Cursor stuck - mouse doesn't respond - elgar1uk - 16-09-2009 20:42

Does anyone know the cure for this? The cursor suddenly goes to the centre of the screen and is stuck and the mouse won't respond. I tried using a different mouse instead from an old computer, but that doesn't work either, so it appears not to be the mouse itself. I also rebooted a couple of times which made no difference. Huh

try system restore

Good idea. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way of starting a system restore except by using a mouse and I can't use the mouse. Sad

Without using a mouse I'm unable to choose a restore point, unless anyone knows better.

have you tried plugging your mouse into the other sockets?

Is the mouse connected via a usb port or a PS/2 port(green). You could try an usb adapter if it's the latter. I dont think a system restore will help in this case. What o/s are you using?

You could try a few things. Press the scroll lock button on your keyboard. If that fails, try rebooting in safe mode (maybe a software conflict). If the mouse cursor moves then its a conflict.

Thanks to firekind and Josh for your kind assistance. I've got mouse function back again now! I have to say I found using a computer without a mouse very difficult (not impossible, but very hard to move around the screen due to never knowing for sure what was the right key to press).

Sory for the stupid question from a totally non-tech person, but on the subject of computer mouse I think mine has had it's day, always sticking even though I try to clean it. Can I buy any make of mouse they have got in the shops and it will be sure to work with my PC?

i would think so.

As long as you have a free USB or PS/2 socket (somehow I don't think anyone here will be using a serial mouse Big Grin) then any mouse should work as a standard mouse. Extra buttons and the scroll wheels can be software dependant though so if you want the extra functionality check the box for the requirements

I veer away from wireless variants due to the ever increasing chances of interference, and annoyance of charging them or their batteries (some gamers veer away from some wireless mice due to lag as well) but mainly it's a personal preference on ergonomics.
