Day 1 Close NZ 246-3 (86 overs) Conway 136 no Nicholls 46 no Robinson 2-50
Good fightback by England on day 2. the first part of the morning session belonged to New Zealand, as the progressed to 288-3 before Wood & Robinson came into the attack. Nicholls was bounced out by Wood & Robinson stood on 4 wickets when Broad shelled a chance, Southee got a life, but Anderson took his wicket & at 338-9 the job was almost done, before Wagner played some shots & Conway brought up his double century. before Root ran him our. The Last pair had added 40 valuable runs.
England were soon in trouble, with Sibley & Crawley out & only 18 runs on the board. More than ever the batting hopes rest with Root.
Close Day 2
NZ 378
ENG 111-2 Burns 559 no Root 42 no
Went to view the highlights after spending a hot day out in the sun, only to find out that it's rained all day at Lords. (smug emoji)
getting a result is gouing to probably need a forfeit of some kind maybe
^you didn't record 8 hours of it rainnig did you?
Not sure whether the playing conditions allow overs lost on dat 3 to be caught up. Usually it's 8 overs per day & they were already well behind on overs on day 1 & 2. One of these side would have to a bad day for it to be a result. England would have to collapse & follow-on, or even less likely, bat past New Zealand & bowl them out cheaply, both unlikely.

That won't happen> The integrity of the match will be a factor, and if I were the Kiwis, I would be wanting as much natural practice as I could get with one to play, together with the reason they are here - the world test championship final - to follow
1st Test ENG V NZ Lords Day 4 Close
NZ 378 & 62-2 (30 overs) Latham 30 n0 Conway 23 Robinson 2-8

After puzzling over the reasons given for the replacement for the injured Foakes, I've now come to the conclusion that it was a selectorial masterplan to call up Haseeb Hameed. The reasons given were that Bracey was already in the squad, but covering 2 roles, a batman & a keeper, so 2 replacements were required. It also signaled the fact that Bracey was always going to play as a batsman. Billings was a poor replacement, as he first class record isn't great & he's been at the IPL with an injury, it gives a very poor message to all the other, & better qualified keepers playing in the Championship Hammed, on the other hand has earned his recall, after his impressive debut in India & then his loss of form, partly down to The England coaches messing with his game. His move to Notts after Lancashire gave up on him, paid off, & Peter Moore has played a part in putting him right, not popular with some during his England coaching spells, he took a lot a criticism that he didn't deserve, he a great coach at County level.
Coming back to my original point, having an inform opener in the squad has maybe given Burns, at least, the push to turn useful starts into big contributions. Whatever Root said in an interview before the match was just backing his openers & with both having played around 20 Tests with averages around 30, just not good enough.
NZ 74-3.
