Went to see the new start trek today and thought it was ok but was disppointed with the story line. I thought the new actors taking on the old roles were really great, special effects out of this world but as for the plot never really liked it. I can't work out why they have to keep using time travel plots all the time and and they seem to keep taking stuff from previous star trek films, without spoiling too much the film where does it leave what some of things that happen in the next gen, DS9 or voyager? For me the best star trek films were star trek 2 and star trek first contact, i will give the new star trek films a chance to see where its heading.
it basically means that ds9, voyager and that may not happen, we're now in an alternate timeline, so anything can happen.
Bloody silly if you ask me, been speaking to a few other star trek fans and they don't seem to like how they done it. I think what they should have done, is done what they did with battlestar galactica and just redone it, instead of just changing the timeline, kinda put me off it
i thought it was quite clever. cos if they'd have just remade it, it woulda gotten a hell of a lot more stick. galactica is a prime example, all the hardcore fans of that hate it
Give me Star Trek: First Contact any day thought that was a better film Smile.
I saw it a few weeks ago and thought that it was pretty good.I'm a life long Star Trek fan from the word go so I'm no newbie. All the actors portrayed the famous characters really well without totally impersonating them. The special effects were excellent, check out how the Enterprise moves in battle compared to how it "lists lazily to the side"(stolen Family Guy Joke)in previous battles. They combined action and humour well in the story(Chris Pine as Kirk beating the simulation was funny and cool at the same time).I know what you mean about another time travel story but I honestly think that this way it gives them leeway not to adhere strictly to the canon in future films and being slaughtered by the die-hard fans.If you are a fan then check out the Comic novel Star Trek:Countdown which is a prequel to the movie and gives you more back story to the film and explains why the movie Romulans are different looking etc.All in all I'm looking forward to the future movies in the series.Just like to add that I saw the new Terminator film this week-end and I wanna add that it's also very good, ignore the bad press reviews and see it for yourself.Anton Yelchin stars in both films(Chekov in Star Trek and Kyle Reese in Terminator).

Ah, thanks for that, I thought I'd seen him somewhere before! yeah, the new terminator is brilliant and that guy really was great in both roles
I thought it was good but i never watched star trek b4
I thought it was brilliant. Finally a Star Trek film that actually deserves to be seen on a big screen! I loved OST,STNG and the films associated with them. Before this First Contact was the best,I think with a superb storyline with actual menace in it.This new one seemed like a labour of love to me.All actors and characters were faithful and sympathetic to the originals without being caricatures and you could tell for once that the story was outside of the normal bounds of Star Trek 'lore' which was refreshing.
I think they got the humour, action and drama balance just right. The inclusion of almost all of the classic 'catchphrases' was clever and subtle too and didn't seem forced.
Also seeing a half dressed Rachel Nichols, even a bright green one,is always nice! Big Grin
