i've noticed recently that whenever i record from 906 or 909 i get a poor quality, flickering picture. any ideas as to why this might be? all of the other channels record fine and 906 and 909 are fine while i'm watching live so it seems a little strange. is it possible that bs are taking measures to stop people recording? and has anyone else experienced this? i use wintv to record by the way if that makes any difference. thanks for any help or ideas
Yes, its been terrible for some while now - you can see the difference in quality between clips that were recorded from recent shows versus shows from a few months ago and older. Means any clips over 768x576 really suffer from a lack of quality. Although you said it seems fine while you're watching live, I find I can see a graininess and lack of clarity to the picture on the TV as well.
Do you think it's because they're transmitting to freeview aswell now?
Although the picture sucks balls on Sky,the recorded picture remains stable and if anything I've found the recording to be slightly better on Sky+.The first widescreen show the other night with Paige had an awful picture and I didn't bother capping only doing videos. It was back to 4:3 last night for the Lynsey show.Perhaps your TV card has trouble with this? I don't think any free 900 channel would use Macrovision, although Sky use it for PPV films.Judging by the poor picture they may be using a lower refresh rate to match their low resolution and this might be affecting your card.I capped The Pad yesterday and it was like HD in comparison! I hope Cellcast put some of their profits back into improving the picture quality because most of my favourite girls are on that channel.

Thanks for the input. the strange thing is that if i record bs in avi format the quality is considerably better than if i record in mpeg. while when i recorded elite tv it was difficult to tell the difference in quality between the two formats (both came out very clear) even though the avi takes up about ten times more memory. i think my best bet i to buy a massive hard drive and only record bs in avi and then convert later. do you think it would help if i change the picture size on my sky settings if they do widescreen again?
There's a member on here called 'Red' and he is pretty much a tech genius. Most of his posts,I'm sure, are in a foreign language but he always has good answers! Big Grin I'd pm him he might be able to help.

Thanks for thevote in confidence but I'm far from what I consider technical eek
TBH I don't do screen capture to PC, I did try it a long time back and things have changed since then but I'm a horses for course person. I want to record TV I use a PVR not a PC

As for differences in quality between formats. All dependant on codecs. As I've mentioned before, AVI is just a wrapper for different codecs so saying AVI doesn't really mean much. Add to the fact you could be running different compression rate, sound stream bit rates, frame rates and such and it begins to sound complicated, and often is, when trying to find optimum file size against quality
Just a good job there's never anything on BS worth recording, isn't it?
