Actress Valerie Harper has passed away at the age 80 she had been suffering from cancer for a while. Her breakout role was in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, then the lead of her own series, Rhoda.

Oh that's a shame I really liked her Rhoda alongside Julie Landsburg and I loved the character of 'Carlton the Doorman' whose face you never saw(Lorenzo Music). I also liked the other series she did that used to be shown in the afternoons on BBC1 in the late 80's/90's called Valerie which featured Harper as a mother with three kids, the eldest of which was young Jason Bateman, who would go on to appear in films. It was very good, not too mawkish(as some American stuff was back then) and believable characters. I don't think she was in any films and I was too young to remember the Mary Tyler Moore Show, in fact I think Rhoda and Valerie were produced by her company MTM Productions. Sad news indeed.
