It's because the FA have asked their broadcast partners to refer to the England women's team as The Lionesses as much as they reasonably can. The idea is to establish a 'brand identity' for the team, i.e. to have a branding which is entirely separate from the men's team, which wouldn't be the case if they just referred to them as England.

This matters because sometimes England men and England women can be playing a match at more or less the same time and so referring to the women as The Lionesses avoids potential confusion. It also allows the FA to hashtag Three Lions for their tweets about the men's team and hashtag Lionesses for their tweets about the women's team.

If it gets on the nerves you could always complain to the FA about their 'brand identity' marketing policy for the England women. But be aware that the Lionesses branding is regarded as iconic by the FA and a really big success. In a world dominated by men they have managed to establish a separate and well known identity for the women.

Or alternatively you could just accept that we live in the internet age which brings things like social media and hashtags along with it. After all, the only reason that people search for hashtag Lionesses is because the team are continually referred to in that way. You might ask if hashtags really matter that much and the answer is yes they do.

Because of the success of the Lionesses hashtag the name Lionesses is now commonly used for the England women's team. You can see it pretty much everywhere. So perhaps you should stop regarding it as just a nickname which gets on your nerves and remember that it's actually much more than that. It's a thriving brand identity.
The quarter finals now and 7 of the sides in them are in the top 11 of the FIFA world rankings, even if the top 2 (USA and Germany) are missing. The exception is England's opponents Colombia, who are ranked 25. Matches tale place on Friday and Saturday.

Don't think i would complain to the FA it was only a opinion lol and anyway it's easy not to get the pair mixed up just call them England Men and England Women simply as that and constantly calling them The Lionesses began way before there Euro's success and to be fair not speaking for anyone on the thread i think it gets on everyone elses nerves because if you look on the thread everyone calls them England Women there actual name not The Lionesses there nickname.

The Lionesses name was first used in 2012. Broadcasters were asked to use it in 2015 and it's been pretty constant since then.
Yeah exactly what I said.
Laura James received a 2 match ban. It will make her available for the final if England make it there.

Yeah about Japan winning the final. Bounce Bounce
Well that was quite a shootout between Australia and France and Australia eventually go through on the penalties to meet England or Colombia in the semi-final on Wednesday.
