I believe he is using "media player classic" - google "mplayerc" and you should find it.

It's a built in feature of the player...

I've got mplayerc but theres no option for making thumbnail previews, i've also got the preview maker by scorp but i keep getting an error message when trying to proces a clip.

Yup, it's definitely Media Player Classic as part of the K-Lite Mega Codec pack.

Under File, the screencaps option is actually helpfully labelled Thumbnails option
