But was Scholes right in saying that Rooney was past his best?

He may be past his best but if in decline he is still better than the opposition then he should play. Scholes can't say too much as he came back and played past his best too!
Of cause Rooney should be in the team, if you can find someone better then pick them. Like it was said, Rooney in a poor Man Utd team got into double figures for assists and goals. He is just being made a scapegoat.

England have now reached the level Scotland had in the early 80's. They have a few good players. (not world class) Yet the Nation has a massively over inflated opinion of the team based on their past history.

Unless changes are made to the domestic game which encourages English youngsters to be given a chance in the Premier league. I fear that in a few years we will be like Scotland are now, struggling to qualify for major tournaments. If they do that is deemed success!

They already have. The likes of Sterling, Welbeck, Henderson, Lallana, Wilshere and Barkley have all been given the opportunity to show us what they can do at this World Cup. None of them played as well as Rooney, who has been England's best player by a fair distance.
There's an interesting quote being attributed to Louis van Gaal today, who is supposed to have said that he doesn't see Rooney as a striker but a midfield general and he's going to play him in centre midfield for Man Utd next season.
Gerrard retired from England duty, Rooney next?

Are you sure about this? i could have sworn Gerrard retired from England duty years ago Wink
Rooney still has another couple of good under achieving years in an England shirt left in him yet.
would love to see if Van Gaal turns him into a midfielder might extend his england career
Must be nice to be able to think about retiring at thirty something, most of us will have to carry on working to 67 at least and probably beyond.
Unfortunately he probably has to remain. He's the only player who gives England a chance of turning a game (in my opinion).

So reluctantly - yes. Sad
