The great man himself once said "This is Australia's first olympic medal for four years".
The gaffe that started the "Colemanballs" column in Private Eye came in the 1976 Olympics, when the Cuban Alberto Juantorena became the only man to win both the 400m & 800m titles. His stride was an incredible nine feet, prompting the comment "Juantareno just opened his legs wide and showed us all his class!". Although credited to David Coleman, it was actually said by his colleague Ron Pickering.
