So he was going 10mph faster than was originally thought and a few metres nearer the ground. When you are jumping from 39,000 metres up and meeting the ground at 843mph does it really matter too much Big Grin
Scary times these. Just seen the news bulletin about the growing tensions between North Korea and South Korea, now North Korea threatening a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the US. Then the US saying they can deal with any nuclear strike. Its like a modern day version of the scenarios seen in the films 'Threads' and 'The Day After'.

Hmmm. I have to disagree with that.

The Soviet Union was an empire built around an ideology which was the polar opposite of the Western way of life. North Korea is a bankrupt state dominated by a family of tin-pot gangsters.

The Kims have had no option but to keep making these threats over the years as it's the only way they can keep their starving people in line. They are revered as Gods by people who don't know any better and the moment they show the slightest sign of weakness they will suffer the same fate as Honecker, Caucescu & co did in Eastern Europe.

IF and it's a very big if, they show the slightest sign of producing a viable nuclear weapon that is small enough to fit on a missile and having a delivery system accurate enough to hit any target other than "somewhere on earth" then it won't be the Yanks they need to worry about, because the Chinese will squash them like bugs. China has a lot of money tied up in the West and they don't want to lose it..

Going back to "Threads" for a moment, those in the know believe that the producers massively underestimated the amount of Warheads the Russians would launch at the UK. In reality, there wouldn't have been much left of any populated areas.

Hope you're right. The film did state though that just the one nuclear bomb that hit Sheffield would have been enough to render the entire resources of the NHS useless.

That film was pretty grim - relentlessly frightening. There wasn't much left by the end of it and society rendered virtually non-existant. If it ever happened for real, it could take hundreds of years for the country to recover, if it ever would.

Witha new, young leader, they are to a large extent an unknown but I would not worry too much at the moment. The North Koreans do this every so often. They are are full of bluster and make threats but they have never amounted to anything. Importantly China (previously the main backer of North Korea) doesn't appear to be backing them on this and is considering joining with the UN in imposing sanctions.

It would have been reasonable to expect London to take at least half a dozen hits. Anywhere with a significant Military, Industrial or Port facility would have been well & truly clobbered and as for major Cities...be somewhere else. Russian tactics at the time called for large warheads or numerous smaller ones as their missiles weren't particularly accurate and the failure rate was stupid.

There are some target maps out there which show the East of England would have been a very bad place to be due to the large number of UK Military and USAF bases at the time. Anywhere from Fylingdales & Catterick in Yorkshire down to Lakenheath in Suffolk would probably still be smouldering now!

If a perfect example of the sheer madness of it all was needed, the Russian plan in response to a NATO First Strike included massive use of Tactical Warheads in Europe to knock out NATO Forces, followed by sending the Czechoslovakian Army across what would have been a smouldering dead zone to capture whatever was left of Western Germany. After they'd done the donkey work (and died of Radiation Sickness), Russian reinforcements would have been sent in.

That little plan was found in a building in Prague after the Communists were booted out. Vaclav Havel dumped it when he became President in 1989.

All scary stuff, but strangely interesting.

Anyone tell me have i missed something in this story, did no one think to test these devices.

They even look like a toy, with a Cortina aerial attached.
amazing story in Cleveland ohio at the moment where 3 women have been rescued having been held in captivity for around 10 years, one of whom Amanda berry has had a daughter who is now 6 years old
Yes an amazing story. Many details are still unclear but the accused is appearing in court today so more should be revealed. The most amazing thing is how he could get away with something like this for so long.
