does anyone know of a dvd player, on the market, that also plays avi files? i am sick of converting downloaded films into dvd for people.
Hi, try the following link, dont know if this model is still available but should find the same brand with the same spec and according to the customer reviews you can drag and drop avi files onto a usb flash drive and plug straight into the unit.

Hope this helps.
thanks for that, it is an option, but i was after one that plays avi files from the discs that i put them on, so that i can keep them and build up a collection.
Some of the old cheaper divx/xvid compatible dvd players would play avi files if they were encoded with divx or xvid codecs, if my memory serves me correctly (getting old so may be wrong, lol).
It isn't as simple as saying AVI playback
AVI, as I think I may have mentioned before somewhere, is just a wrapper for a myriad of codecs (some of which are no longer supported by anyone).
Finding out what underlying codecs you have is the first step to finding out what support you need from your future player. If you are looking at vcd/svcd then these will more than likely be in the aforementioned divx/xvid codec but anyone's guess on none standard clips unless you decode the details of the file with something like gspot
