just read on the bbc news webpage that sites dedicated to pornography will get its own domain (.com, .org, .co.uk etc).

(mods pls move if i have posted in the wrong place)
Whilst the porn industry has been campaigning for this for a long time, there is a real danger that they might have shot themselves in the foot.

Will some countries make it compulsory that all xxx content move to this domain, with legal penalties for non-compliance? Once this has happened, what is there to stop a Government from saying to its country's ISPs "you will block access to the .xxx domain or we'll pull your licence" or in the case of some regimes "or we will throw you in jail".

Even if the threat wasn't as extreme, putting all the eggs in one basket will make "control" in whatever shape or form far more easier. Perhaps they might say that people must register to access xxx, or prove their identities...

The cry from the heart will be that it is only to protect children and prevent money laundering etcetc and could make a very good soundbite (especially in an election year) but we all know that even the most democratic of governments is terrified of the power of the internet because they cannot control it. I suspect many of them have already thought this one through and will be rubbing their hands with glee at this news.
its to sperate porn sites from mainstream sites, for example madthumbs.com is a porn site but the name does not suggest it is where as madthumbs.xxx suggests adult content.

what i dont like is when people confuse porn with prostitution

If so, they would have to define exactly what is considered to be xxx material?

But to a lot of people it is all one and the same thing and they don't want to know the difference
I don't think this is workable in it's present format, as there are domains with the same name. Including this forum. If you tag .xxx on the end. Then you will have two or more sites with the same name.

Example: Playboy.com & Playboy.co.uk would both end up as Playboy.xxx So you can clearly see, it won't work.
