Renault Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica of Poland was involved in an absolute horror crash over the weekend, while driving a rally car. He sustained multiple compound fractures of his right elbow, shoulder and leg. He is very lucky his arm didn't have to be amputated. I wish him all the best in his recovery and although it'll be a long time away, I hope to see him back in Formula 1 at some point in the future.
Massive sympathy for the guy - I rate him. Give him a competitive car and he's a very competent driver who can challenge the top half-dozen on any given day. I hope the surgery won't impair his skills.
It's always a shock when someone who does something dangerous for a living (like guiding a 200mph road-missile round a twisty circuit for two hours) gets hurt outside of their professional danger zone. Seems kinda wrong.
It put me in mind of Alessandro Nannini; me and a colleague were discussing old F1 drivers from our youth recently and I name-checked Nannini, saying I always felt he was a ridiculously reckless driver who drove spectacularly for ten laps before crashing or blowing up and having to retire. When I checked, he was an even better driver than I recalled... of course his arm was nearly amputated in a helicopter crash and it was saved by then-revolutionary microsurgery, but he could never race in F1 again.
Really hope Kubica comes back strong like Massa seemed to.
zinardi double leg amputee still racing after his horror crash. world touring cars and even drove an adapted f1 car in 2006 for bmw. now competes in marathons.

his comeback is dependant on how well his hand heals, if does not heal the way the doctors hope then he wont be drving f1 cars again. i hope he gets better. if and when he does return i see hime driving for red bull next season (2012) or 2013. before button signed for mclaren he was in the frame to take that seat next to hamilton.

he is lucky to be alive after that crash, on the telegrap website yesterday shown the roadside barrier going through the engine block spliting the car in the middle missing both drivers and going through the back.
Hopefully he can make a full recovery, would be a big loss to the sport. He always shows his quality at the circuits where driver skill is most apparent such as Spa, Monaco and Suzuka. I'd love him to replace Massa at Ferrari if he comes back. I like Massa but he hasn't been performing of late. Plus Kubica is apparently Alonso's closest friend in the paddock, he already visited him in hospital. It'd be interesting to see how 2 friendly competitive drivers would compete with each other.
nick heidfeld is replacing kubica until kubica is fit

kubica is aiming to return by the end of the season if there no complications from the surgery, some movement and sensitivity in the hand. 2012 the comeback of kubica
I was really pissed off when I heard he crashed. This year Renault seem to have a very promising car in the R31 and Robert had a horrible crash. I hope he can recover and come back sooner than expected so he can at least wring the neck of that beast.
Big Shame. Very talented driver. He got away with the crash in Canada in 2007. Seems he was not so lucky this time. I wish him the best of luck in his recovery.
