they have some decent stuff on there, fair play. They are all pretty good.
i use this website for buying laptops and stuff. http://www.ebuyer.com plus people leave feedback to let you know how it runs.
things to look for my man

1) at least a intel duel core processor
2) at least 2gb ram
3) at least 200 gb hard drive
I bought the HP G60 just before crimbo, it's a great buy at a good price. It's my second HP, I bought it to replace a Sony Vaio and frankly I prefer it.
You might want to take a look on this website http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ they have some pretty good offers.
Shall be watching this thread with any hints/tips.
Will be in the market myself soon.
Also take a look at http://www.morgancomputers.com

I've had a Toshiba laptop for a long time, can't fault the build quality, A mate has Dell but struggled to get some parts for it at some point even though it was a recent model build quality is pretty good though. I've got a MSI gaming laptop and its amazing machine and its light too, I spend most of surfing on my Macbook (White) and had some issues with external case quality after 6 months of use and had to have some parts replaced, my previous ibook went on for years without a problem though.

As for the OP I'd not bother with a 17inch screen unless you just plan to lug it around indoors, its a lot of extra weight and the battery life will be poor. I'd also go for a Core 2 Duo if you can budget for it, try looking at some of the Samsung models too as you get a great award winning machine spec for the price.

Also got to throw my hat into the ebuyer ring. Very good site. Have used them a few times, good prices, quick delivery, excellent service.
It's not the technical help you are looking for but this usually has a few good deals for laptops etc
