The shortlist for (imo) the best and most accurate award for British Album of the Year has been announced. They've gone a bit more mainstream this year, but there are much more good albums so that makes up for it. Anyway here's the shortlist:

Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions
Villagers - Becoming A Jackal
Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More
Paul Weller - Wake Up The Nation
Wild Beasts - Two Dancers
Kit Downes Trio - Golden
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
Dizzee Rascal - Tongue N’ Cheek
Foals - Total Life Forever
I Am Kloot - Sky At Night
The xx - xx

Was just wondering what others thought about this shortlist, who they thought were favourites, stuff like that. So...thoughts?
I haven't listened to many of the albums on the list. I checked out the Wild Beasts album after you posted a track in the 'currently listening' thread and that was pretty good. I've only just got around to listening to Mumford & Sons in the past couple of weeks and rate it very highly, but the album I'd choose as a winner would be the XX - great tracks, simple, downbeat, immensly innovative and a standout album of the last year.

However, I've just checked and their joint favourites with Dizzee Rascal, which probably means neither of those two will be walking away with the prize...
I have no idea who Kit Downes Trio or Villagers are. Based on previous Mercury voting habits, I'm going with Kit Downes Trio or Villagers for the win. Big Grin
Isn't the winner of this award usually an artist (I use this word lightly) or band who is extremely pretentious?
i'm rooting for i am kloot. great band who are criminally overlooked!

No. It was last year, but they seem to have recognised that as a mistake, so they seem to be going with more well-known, well-respected bands this year. As skateguy said, it probably won't be The xx even though they're favourites (and why the hell is Dizzee even in it when he's made his worst album yet??). I really want Foals to win, cause thats the best album, but my gut says Wild Beasts.

Its a good award show, though, cause its always a good reflection of the best albums of the year - I recommend it to everyone...

...although I think its aaages away still Huh

I agree Bob
Mercury Music Prize 2020 has been won by Michael Kiwanuka
Obviously no big show this year so they did it on The One Show.

UKAP Cool can't have a glittering do either, do you think the BBC would do it for us?
Full marks on the thread reviving there Wink

I enjoyed the BBC4 thing on Wednesday, I was expecting Dua Lipa might take it. Well done to Mike.
