i use a wintv pvr in my pci slot if i wanna record off sky or freeview, works a treat but the data records at high bitrate through the rgb connection, e.g 8 hours = 20gb>>> yes thats gigabytes (recordings are hq). I can also connect via scart but i would need and additional adapter for that. After this i just convert whatever i recorded to lower video size and also edit out trash that i dont need like ads.

ive got 1 of the video capture things they're good but when u record a clip it takes up alot of space

Yeh i know lol - lots of space but i thought i might watch it in a smaller window and grab it with BSR Screen recorder.
That way the files will not be massive and I can get a good compression rate.
I will use the normal recording for every day stuff and then burn it to DVD etc

The command line program
ffmpeg for both linux and windows can process all types of video files to reduce their size. The original file can then be deleted.
