Came home from work today (it was alright this morning) and my sky box wont fire up, and the red standby light is just flickering. Ive tried everything, and after phoning and getting more help, it turns out the thing has just died, so i will need a new one ,at £65, couldve done without that! (it is over 4 years old) Anyway, i will be greatful for any posts of the stuff i like (esp Holly James on sat night! ) from my fellow posters, as i may be without sky for a few days. Nightmare, as ive watched the channels every night for about 4 years! I guess thats whats worn it out. So no posts from me ,of new stuff anyway, tho i have some recent stuff backed up onto dvd, which i did only yesterday! Hopefully i will be back in business soon, Nightmare!Sad
I feel your pain mate, i turned on my tv last night and it blew up. The extended warranty only ran out at the end of january. It was a 42" plasma and i used it as my pc monitor. Sad

Nightmare, tho, using it as a monitor seems quite OTT, dont spose leaving it on so much caused that? But you dont expect things of that quality to blow do you? My box is old, but the fact that it went suddenly gives you know chance to back things up. Im not paying the £7 a month for extended warranty tho, its not worth it! Im so sky-dependant, as i have little life outside it just now,and a week of for half term (schoolteacher) ,so im watching what i can on terrestrial, and maybe some online.. ShySad
A good friend of mine has lent me a sky+ box until tuesday when i get my new replacement! I am recording Holly james now,and have enjoyed some good tv tonight. The last two nights of terrestrial telly however, have been painfull, and i dont have a freeview box. Theres no turning back after sky+,And i cant understand forum members here who dont have it, surely its a pre-requesite!? This is my hobby, and, unlike many friends and people i know, i watch lots of telly, (no soaps or sport tho) so its very important to have the best tool for the job. I just hope it wont break down again, for another 4 years at least! Important
I got through 3 HD units in about 10 months before an engineer gave me the following tip:-

Raise your Sky+ box onto blocks to allow the airflow underneath as the fan is situated on the underside of the unit and therefore gets very hot.He also suggested regular resets just to keep the machine "regular".Since raising it onto blocks it has worked relatively error free ever since.Interestingly the engineer said that Sky were not keen on him passing on this information to customersWink
You could just complain to SLY by saying that you're gong to leave and go with Virgin Media. They will soon waive that £65. As long as your out of contract they will do anything to keep you. And I mean anything.
It worked for me as soon as I said I was going. Just say it like you mean it, its got to be worth the price of a phone call.

Thanks, ive heard that said before, but im still in contract, and have my phone and broadband with them. They installed my replacement today,so im back to normal. If they really do give boxes for those who threaten to leave, why not do so for a valued customer like me? Trouble is, im too honest for my own good, and i know it!
I had problems with the standard box fucking up all the time, i ended up getting them replaced every three months, was told by the sky engineer's that with standard ones your better off buying your own one, Few years later upgraded to sky+ but every few months the hard drive used to fucking pack up, got told by engineer that they don't put very good harddrives in the box's and they don't build them to last very long. Recently changed to skyhd am hoping these box's are of a much better build. Took out a protection my box's as cost money for them to keep coming and sorting it out.
Today, my replacement stopped working. I went to change a channel, and the screen just went blue, with the msg that there was a problem . I rebooted- nothing, then remembering what they told me about my old box, i plugged in again holding the left/right buttons for 30 secs, nothing, then all of a sudden the centre light went crazy with the rec light on, and after rebooting again, it worked again: - Having erased all that was on the hard drive, and ive now lost my 'anytime' function for another 72 hours! Im gutted as i was to use this tonight, and had a movie recorded. The local engineer hasnt been answering his phone, but when i rang sky, they told me i neednt have reset the box in this way, and you can phone them to get it set back,or use the sky planner housekeeping clean up to restore the channels! It then began making a loud whirring sound, so ive called them to come take a look.
Needles to say, ive done no posting this saturday, and im not in the mood either. its been a horrible half term week, when all i can do is watch telly, and ive had nothing but trouble with that for a week!annoyed
