every time i put a blank dvd in my writer it says i have 0 bytes available. i've tried the dvds on a mates pc and they're nice and empty there so why does mine think they're unwritable. i tried a cd and that was fine!

hard drive's starting to get full and, frankly, i need the space

please help...

Have you tried switching it off and on again ?

My first course of action with any electronic devices is always to remove the power for a minute and then power up again.
aye, this has been going on for a week or so now

meant to mention that i haven't changed brand or anything as simple as that

scoured the internet trying to find a similar problem but have blanked - bugger!
How are you informed that there is 0 bytes available? Through the DVD writing software/application? Or through your PC operating system (I use a Mac so not sure what the proper term for that is).

If its though the DVD writer software, maybe it would be worth trying an alternative application or uninstalling and reinstalling the one you use?

If this doesn't solve anything then it may be hardware related. Is the DVD writer internal or external?
As Skate has said. Details!
From what you've posted I couldn't even come to the conclusion of what hardware you have. Skate is presuming it's a PC but it could even be a PVR from what you've written

You say same brand of disk, but are they the same batchas somevary the dye type depending on which factory pressed them

If it is a PC, as Skate said, where are you checking the details? What OS are you running? What software have you tried? What drive do you have? Does it still read commercial, and more importantly your old written DVDs? Probably other things I need to know but it's 03:30 Tongue
i try to write a disc - using nero - and it's spat out each time saying the disc is full
go to 'my computer' where it says free space 0, total size 0 on the drive d icon. open properties and my little pie chart is solid blue stating disc full
took the same disc next door to my neighbour and the same procedure says the disc is unwritten and empty
dvd writer is onboard
what could it be if all is fine when using a cd?
damn thing worked last week!
thanks for you interest so far gents. hope i've filled the gaps with this
Some more info is still required if you want some expert help from Red. The more info you give, the more accurate and helpful the advice will be.

bugger, thought i'd covered it all

still running xp home
dvds are from the same pack - granted only tesco specials but they've worked fine for years
it still reads all my dvds - both written, used for storage and original movies
as for what drive? i'm sorry but i don't know what you mean. i'm not what you'd call computer litterate
i'm using an older emachines pc - leave me alone, i'm unemployed at the moment. a new pc is on the list - but the spec is still reasonable
any more info you need just tell me and i'll provide
once again, thanks guys, down to my last 4gb!
If you right click on your DVD burner drive, select properties. Then go to the hardware tab and the name of your drive should be at the top of the list.

You may want to look at this link and try the drive diagnostic's from microsoft.
