Newcastle Brown Ale is known as "Dog" in the north-east because blokes used to tell the missus they were walking the dog and then they'd go to the pub so it may well be the same thing.

After several bottles, it also reduces your I.Q. to about that of the average retarded basset hound, as I can personally attest. Worth it, though. There's also the reputation it has for turning otherwise calm men into "mad dogs", something you can see demonstrated in any number of town centres around the north east at chucking out time. Especially the one nearest to the village I live in.
