I'm trying to figure out how this new recommended tag works. I feel it may be a gimmick more than anything.

You can turn the recommendations off easily enough, in the advanced options, although why bother, they aren't doing any harm.

These tags which have been added to the site could be useful, although I notice the most common tag is the dreaded ohmibod.

I have my favourites in my bookmarks and a couple have disapeared when I click on them it just redirects me to the featured page or homepage if you understand its like they have deleted there room ?

When that redirect happens it's because the room can't be found, so yes it must have been deleted.
