The Rising
As supernatural dramas named after Springsteen songs so, this current Sky thing series is fairly half-decent. I make it at least 4 folk here are watching, so maybe they'd like to discuss it.

For those half-interested, it's about this bird who wakes up dead, but her real dad can still see her, and she's trying to work out who killed her. Laugh a minute. She seems to still be able to do some tech bits like scroll phones or use computers, but hey, who knows about the afterlife, right?

I've not finished episode 2, but it's been pretty okay so far.

RE: The Rising
I like the way the they've approached the afterlife/limbo situation, she can interact with things, but only those who can see her, are aware, everyone else is oblivious. I won't spoil it, but I will say that it slows a little midway, but stick with it, all in all a good show. Speeds up towards the end and is satisfying imo.

The main actress, Clara Rugaard (Danish), reminds me somewhat of Alicia Vikander, which isn't a bad thing.

RE: The Rising
Now have finished pt 2. Interesting twist with another witness to her, though someone who must have a really casual attitude to local news (or else be such an outsider that blah blah careless talk etc).

The bloke playing her dad is the only one I recognise from anything else, so there's a fresh sense of expectation (or rather, not thinking "well it must be so & so, they're always playing baddies" etc)

RE: The Rising
Made it through episode 3. Some twists, and the inference that there's actually more going on (probably just as well because 5 more episodes would have been a stretch when it's already feeling a bit Look and Read really).
The point with the vigil would be that she risked her life riding track bikes, and had she died in an accident, it would have been different, but boozing up whilst her killer might be at large was a pretty poor show. Though I realise why her dad might not have thought that through on the spur of the moment.

As I may have said before, binge-watching is not my style, but, I found this series quite compelling, so I did just that. Plenty more twists & turns along the way, & I think really well acted by all concerned, making it convincingly believable, which is a good effort when you consider the subject matter. A big tick from me.

Funny I said that, episode 4 and it's feeling more like some Childrens BBC thing like Dark Season or Aliens In The Family #80sthrowback

The more it moves from a simple murder inquiry and becomes some ooly-wooly supernatural bash, the less assured it seems. Also the fact it's clearly one sort of close-knit community, but filmed in somewhere completely different, does start to work against it.

RE: The Rising
Episode 5 at least saw some development, as a completely OTT baddie gave himself away something rotten, and then manipulated his thick friends even though the police should note such behaviour makes him seems guiltier not innocenter. Mild drama at the end.

RE: The Rising
Finally caught up with episode 6, where things start to turn a bit Sapphire & Steel. I daresay if I had seen more Nigel Kneale I'd be using that as a comparative reference too. Mind, someone mentioned Edge of Darkness this week, and I can see comparisons there too.

Some nice bits though, like the church candle scene.

RE: The Rising
On the one hand, I was quite pleased to have my suspicions confirmed by the big revelation, although the fact that by that stage there was nobody left who could plausibly be guilty did off-set this (and nobody involved could work it out either - but at least maybe they didn't have a go at Victoria's ex-husband).

RE: The Rising
In a dramatic break with tradition, I finished this off. Really pretty good stuff, nice on the themes of grief, and even a half-decent excuse for who could and couldn't see Neve. When she did her cell confrontation, I did wonder about Victoria being there, but I didn't see it would go quite like that. Hope that the actresses playing Neve and Alex go on to bigger and better things.
